AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

Once FNBO has posted points to AGR (at statement closing), the bank no longer has the points. Once points are posted to AGR they are yours to use. FNBO has only been in place for a couple of years. I doubt another change is in the works right now. Sorry to hear about this problem. I've had...

    Printed-out seat checks

I first encountered this on the Pacific Surfliner last February.

Disputing an issue when error made by AGR agent

A few years ago, I had a reservation drop off my Amtrak app. I could do a search and locate it just fine. Kind of unnerving when that happens. Turns out, it was a reservation made online and later had something changed by phone call which caused that to happen. Similiar to what Zephyr17...

Amtrak long distance trains - Power Socket types

I travel with two standard household extension cords (2 conductor), three outlets each - a 9 foot and a 6 foot. Easier to pack than a power strip and it provides me with multiple outlets. The 9 footer is run across the top of the couch to the window where my wife can plug in her phone charger...

    WiFi on longer routes

As far as I know, none of the western long distance trains have WIFI.

No WiFi on the EB that I recall. Use your cellular when service is available.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

For comparison, our September/October SWC round trip (LAX>CHI>LAX) was 143,326 points for a Deluxe Bedroom both legs. Reservation was made in February.

    Attire on the train?

I usually wear cargo pants and a T shirt with casual slip-on shoes. At dinner I'll put on a long-sleeve shirt (unbuttoned) over the T shirt!

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

I'm used to changes showing up rather quickly, I'm guessing you do too! That said, I've noticed that the new SWC times are still not reflected when I view my September/October ticket in the app and on the website. If I generate a "schedule" for those dates via the website, it shows the updated...

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

This quote is from "nickwilson159" on the Radio Reference Railroad/Railfan Monitoring Forum. In the thread "NXDN Reception Comparison" he pretty much sums up my take on the subject. "With that said, unless you're near a yard, you're probably not going to hear any NXDN in use on railroad...

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

The bigest hurdle with digital (and possibly encrypted) is interchangeability between roads. Right now with analog, CTCSS/DPL is not (or very rarely) used on road frequencies. It is used in yards somemtimes, Amtrak PD uses it, etc. With NXDN you have "RAN"s to program along with frequencies...

I was under the impression that sleeper rooms are assigned E in 30 and then E in 31; then D in 30 and D in 31, etc. Don't ask me where I got that impression from!

An outside antenna as high up as you can will make a difference. With the stock "rubber duck" will only be sufficient when you are relatively close to the train. For a handheld scanner, I would recommend the Smiley Antenna 5/8 SLIM DUCK 160 MHZ https://www.smileyantenna.com/product-p/16020.htm

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Unfortunately (for us scanner people) encryption, especially law enforcement, is becoming more and more widespread. LA County Sheriff just recently moved to a new trunking system with most channels encrypted. LA City Police is still "in the clear" with their P25 digital system (not trunked)...

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

The change to digital by railroads has been discussed for some time now. Yes, "eventually" NXDN will become more widespread. Here in the Los Angeles area the only NXDN I monitor is LA County Metro light rail and subways. There is no BNSF/UP NXDN here in my area. Even outside my area, there are...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Last February when we booked #4 for a September trip we were originally put in car 0431. At that time, there was no 431 sleeper so I had our room changed to one in the 0430 car. Nice to see the other sleeper back.

My wife received the email (actually 2) announcing these changes for our September/October trip. So far no changes to the ticket in the Amtrak app.
