    No Id

They probably won't ask for one when you board (usually an e-ticket is enough), but that's definitely not guaranteed, so I would definitely highly recommend you have some sort of government issued photo identification. However on some of the shorter routes, they almost never bother, so could you...

When an RPG launcher needs to be transported

I love Florida. Here's another great offensively-Florida headline: Florida mayor fires two shots at deputies at his home before his arrest for practicing medicine without a license People are funny.  :giggle:

The elusive Boston sleeper (March 4 -5, 2019?)

On #48 coming home from Rochester last month, 4812 (VL 62040) was out of commission due to some of its pipes freezing and bursting in Chicago. I checked and it wasn't even particularly cold in CHI that day, but that's what happened. So yeah, this definitely sounds to me like one of the most...

Any Luck Getting the AGR Credit Card Fee Waived?

You know you get an immediate $100 statement credit when you sign up, right? So you’re ahead by $21 right out of the gate. And how common is it for huge companies to just waive annual card fees? I don’t see why they would be too enthralled by the idea of missing out on revenue from a new...

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited Consist from Los Angeles to Chicago

That’s the sense I’ve gotten as well. It takes much more time to splice that sleeper in between the Trans-Dorm and diner than to just attach it to the back, but it’s also not an ideal location at all. Having it at the back means that sleeper passengers are in two totally different parts of the...

    California Zephyr or Coast Starlight?

Is the SJ really so much faster than the Starlight that it can catch up in the event of a delayed Chief?

    California Zephyr or Coast Starlight?

Since it’s a guaranteed connection, Amtrak is obligated to get you to your destination and pay for any costs associated with doing so. They will usually put connecting passengers on a bus to meet the train, but if the Chief is just too late for that to work out, you will likely have to spend a...

    Virginia Rail Info/Update

Nope. If you book it as a multi-city, connections flat out aren't guaranteed, even if that particular connection could be booked normally. I don't totally understand why, but that's the rule.

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited Consist from Los Angeles to Chicago

It's not normal at all for them to add a second loco east of St. Louis. Sounds like they just needed to get it to Chicago.

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited Consist from Los Angeles to Chicago

Between LAX and SAS, you are at the rear of the train, and have to walk through the TE coach, two Sunset coaches, and SSL to get to the diner. Between SAS and CHI, you are right between the Trans-Dorm and the diner (technically a CCC). The SSL and coaches are behind that.

earning tier qualifying points (vouchers and Maple Leaf)

So if I ever take the Canadian, I can save money by booking an extra segment to Niagara Falls? And can I add that onto the "Sleeper Plus class deals" found here?

    Train Jam 2019: CZ (5) March 14-16, 2019

The maximum on the CZ is 15 cars. So if Amtrak can gather the equipment, TrainJam could grow by a few.

Can you link to that full spreadsheet? Thanks!

Wine Question (packed in carry-on bags?)

The real question is how do you keep yourself from ruining that bubble wrap by happily popping all the bubbles? :P

earning tier qualifying points (vouchers and Maple Leaf)

For typical Amtrak travel, a longer trip costs significantly less than the sum of two shorter segments (this is also why many people here don't recommend breaking up a ride into multiple sleeper and non-sleeper segments). And how do VIA and Amtrak deal with buckets and such when pricing the...

    California Zephyr or Coast Starlight?

Yes, but the odds are that it's more expensive, since the respective buckets are more. And that's also why I used the word "likely" in my original post, since the odds indicate that that will likely be the case, but don't guarantee it.

    California Zephyr or Coast Starlight?

I don’t doubt at all that the Chief is a great train, and you probably noticed that it’s on my wish list. I just don’t think (from what I’ve heard and seen) that it’s better than the Zephyr (which I have taken, BTW).

any trip ideas (from Portland or Seattle to Chicago)

Considering 8/27 is listed right there as $763 as well, finding that deal doesn’t seem to be too much of a miracle. Yes it’s the lowest bucket, but that doesn’t mean it’s a rare occurrence. But considering that’s more than five months out, I guess the EB is one of the routes that doesn’t follow...
