    Southwest Chief recommendations/advice

I like the right side, for a variety of reasons. One of my "markers" is this huge power plant on the river shortly before you reach Kansas City, Missouri. You can see the lights for miles. After La Junta, sit on the left side until you get close to the Raton Pass. The left has better views of...

    WestJet?

I used them to cross Canada a while back. It was a six-hour flight both ways, and I was comfortable. The crew was friendly, and we had (free) TV in the seatback. I agree with the comparisons to Southwest, but you do get to choose your seat in advance. They're more like Alaska Airlines. Even the...

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

The point about having to hold onto her glass is a valid one. She is not “weak”. The smooth trays without even a divot to hold a glass are a pain. You can’t read or work on your laptop because you’re busy holding your drink to keep it from spilling. She added to her statement by giving everyone...

Another Quick Chicago TR (March 2022)

Yup. I was there for the annual (?) meeting at Roosevelt in 2016. We watched "The Gay Divorcee".

Another Quick Chicago TR (March 2022)

Nope. I’ve only been to one gathering since they tend to have them on weekdays.

Please send a note to Amtrak about this and include their names. CSRs love to hear from happy customers, and it will go in their annual review. :)

Another Quick Chicago TR (March 2022)

Here is some history about your hotel. The Chicago Art Deco Society helped ensure the historic road map (which was discovered during renovations) was fully restored and displayed in the lobby. https://chicago.curbed.com/2015/5/22/9957748/take-a-look-inside-the-new-hampton-inn I've stayed at...

Three Adults in a Family Room

Honestly, I'd just have it done in Chicago. There's really no sense in stressing about it and making a pointless drive when you KNOW you can have the ticket printed in Chicago.

Three Adults in a Family Room

Battle Creek is staffed and is a crew change point. They have a gated parking lot that the attendant monitors/opens for people, and if the lot is full, they write out a parking pass for the lot across the street. Kalamazoo is definitely staffed during the day. During Covid, they weren't staffed...

Do you prefer the upper or lower bed in a Viewliner sleeper?

Lower, because I use a CPAP. Before that, upper because it was fun to climb up there and look out the window. It's like sleeping in a tree house.

Close call at a grade crossing

It's hard to tell how far away she was before the gates came down. There are crossings here where the lights activate and then the gates start to come down just a second later. Some crossings have more of a delay between lights and gates. (Or maybe that's just my imagination?) When it's snowy...

    Springfield IL

In Springfield, you can visit the Lincoln Presidential Museum, his home, his tomb, and the Old State Capitol. You can also visit the current Capitol and the Illinois State Museum.

    Inconvenience of Flying

I would definitely appreciate a thread like this. I’m planning a trip that involves a combination of trains and rental cars.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Ten states in the Northeast/East are under a blizzard warning, and all of them are along the coast. I wouldn’t expect my crew to head in under those conditions, and people shouldn’t be traveling unless it’s a dire emergency. I don’t blame them for canceling the trains.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

There may be issues getting crew to the stations. Additionally, there could be issues with frozen switches. 20” of fresh snow in the Midwest is extremely uncommon. We don’t get that much at a time, unless it drifts after a particularly bad storm, and the trains tend to plow through it before it...

    Inconvenience of Flying

It takes me three hours to get to O’Hare, and yet flying from Chicago to LA is still much faster and more convenient than spending three days on a train.

    What should Amtrak change?

    1) The ability to combine points and cash instead of booking with either all points or all cash. I can do this through every major hotel brand and airline, so why not Amtrak? 2) Extend the Pere Marquette north from Grand Rapids to Traverse City. I'm not sure where Michigan stands on the plan to...
