Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

I don't tip the fast food worker taking my order, and I certainly don't feel that asking which microwave meal I would like is service to the level that merits tipping. As for having the food brought to me, I always tip if the person performing the service is being paid low wages, especially the...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

I draw the tipping line with flexible dining. As badly as I feel for the single staff member working the car - I just can't bring myself to tip for a glorified microwave dinner. Since I don't tip, I clear my own table and throw things out myself.

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

Nobody is arguing that Amtrak should be anything less than fully ADA compliant. I see the discussion centering on the timeline to achieve that goal - and whether or not Amtrak is acting in good faith in furtherance of the goal.

Funding, Border Inspection and Operation of Cross Border Services

It's probably a safe bet that the railroad station preclearance facilities in Canada will be staffed and managed by the nearby airport preclearance operations.

Funding, Border Inspection and Operation of Cross Border Services

They are funded in large part through user fees - but yes, they are funded by a check written by the United States government. Was there a C&I surcharge on Amtrak trains for passengers who crossed the border? If not, and they open a dedicated facility in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver, the...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Inertia in large corporations is a hard thing to overcome. Even if Covid subsides, I will be surprised to see service return to normal levels earlier than announced - especially if the trains would run at low capacity since the booking window would be extremely short. But I would love to be...

Shooting onboard Amtrak in Lees Summit, MO

The cost of modifying infrastructure alone suggests to me that we will never see TSA-level security at railroad stations. Most rural train stations are pretty open places, especially as far as the platform is concerned.

Close call at a grade crossing

It could be that the driver stopped long and panic mode set in - so rather than backing up they drove forward. No matter how you slice it, this was a VERY close call. Thank goodness nobody was hurt.

Maybe no cellphone coverage is not always a negative for Amtrak?

Cellphone coverage isn't only about making phone calls. For me it's really about being able to use my phone as a mobile hotspot. The wi-fi on the Lake Shore Limited is much slower than when I use my own phone.

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

It was not clear to me if the allegation is that the homeless people have organized to some degree or if organized crime has stepped in. If it is the latter, I agree that there is no information as to how it transitioned. My assumption is that organized crime would have seen the opportunity...

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

I haven't seen any generalizations in this thread. What I have seen is someone who has some inside knowledge make the following factual allegation: "This problem is a snatch and grab by homeless people that has gotten organized to a major problem." If that is incorrect then please let us know.

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

In the article I linked to, the UP places the blame squarely on the LAPD and the prosecutor’s office.

Maybe no cellphone coverage is not always a negative for Amtrak?

At the end of the day this is a debate between those who want Amtrak long distance trains to be a land cruise and those who want trains that serve a broader spectrum of travelers.

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

According to the UP approximately 90 containers are compromised per day in the Los Angeles area. This is up substantially in the past couple of years. There has also been assaults on railroad staff, which is even more concerning. This article has an interview with one of the perpetrators...

Maybe no cellphone coverage is not always a negative for Amtrak?

As a business traveler, decent cell coverage is why I feel comfortable taking the Lake Shore Limited. Access to email is vital to me for a 20+ hour trip.

Business Class in long distance trains

Isn’t seat pitch in the LSL business class the same or less than in coach? You are really paying for the 2-1 seating and the privacy.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Whew! My February trip on the Lake Shore Limited survived the cut. Westbound on Friday. Eastbound on Saturday. I got very lucky.

Oregon to Boston, but not on the Empire Builder after all

Excellent. That will allow us to have a nice dinner before boarding.

    Lamy Station destaffed again

    That is correct.

Oregon to Boston, but not on the Empire Builder after all

Thanks for the trip report! When did they tell you that you had to return to the Metropolitan Lounge to retrieve your bags?
