    Auto Train discussion

Holy cow, I did not realize that it went up in price so much. I was just reading trip reports where it was $50 and for some reason I thought that it went to $60.

    Auto Train discussion

I booked a northbound trip for the latter half of August. When we arrive in Lorton, I still have an 9 hour drive to get home (if there is no traffic). Is it worth paying the $60 fee for priority off-loading? On the one hand, I doubt that the train is very full that time of year, but on the...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

Springfield is already a nearly three hour drive for us. So I really don't want to drive farther to New Haven, especially since I would just turn around and go home right after dropping my son off. Unfortunately, the airlines won this battle. I have already booked an airline ticket from...

Except there are no connections from Hartford, either.

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

Thanks, Joel! This reservation is actually for my son, who will be attending college in Lakeland. I was in the process of looking at return trips for his Christmas break, and was surprised to see that there is NO availability for a one-way fare from Springfield, MA to Lakeland on January 6th...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

I haven't been around in quite some time, so permit a couple of questions for the Silver Meteor that relegate me to newbie status: 1) I have a roomette in 9810. Is this a Viewliner II? 2) I am connecting to a Northeast Regional train in New York. There is an approximately 1.5 hour layover...

Winter storm related delays and cancellations Winter 2022-2023

I've been to North Dakota a couple of times in the winter. I think many people underestimate the impact of the wind in that part of the country. The snowplows can clear a road, and within minutes the snow covers it again. I imagine that drifting snow must be an issue for the railroads as well.

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

But does the Airo come equipped with this technology? I might have missed it, but I do not see any indicators in the photos.

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

Do you mean like on the British railroads where there is an LED indicator to tell you if a seat is available?

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

I activated my card on the 25th. I got an email today saying that I should activate my card. Hmm... I better use it to make sure that it is actually activated.

Canadian border crossing requirements, procedures and experiences on Amtrak

I crossed the border yesterday. I can't imagine how the now-optional ArriveCan submission speeds things up. I was through the border in about 15 seconds - with no ArriveCan submission involved. So even if you can submit an entry, don't bother.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

Setup was very easy for me. Hopefully I won't have any glitches moving forward. I set up auto-pay as well.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

This seems like a fairly seamless transition. Kudos to Amtrak and FNBO.

    Boston-Montréal overnight

What about splitting the train in Springfield? I'm not sure if Springfield has the infrastructure to do that, but it avoids the slow trip through the Berkshires to get to Boston.

    Boston-Montréal overnight

Montreal to Sherbrooke is low hanging fruit. There have been proposals already for that route, and I have a feeling that we will see it someday. Perhaps when the light rail project in Montreal is complete and the province has the appetite to spend more money on rail. As far as the complaint...

    Amtrak executives receive bonuses

Agreed that this is peanuts. Hearing the complaining about these modest bonuses is ironic given the frequent complaints that Amtrak needs to attract better talent when it comes to management.

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

Hmm... when I put in a booking request it shows a bus for the entire route between Burlington and Albany.

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

Today was supposed to be the launch of Ethan Allen service to Burlington. Amtrak, to their credit, has arranged for bus service between Burlington and Albany.

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

If it is indeed a structural issue, this does not look like a quick fix. If it is going to be torn down, I wonder how long it will take to get the permits. Hopefully the permits are already in place. I feel really badly for the Ethan Allen's return to Burlington, Vermont. I was at the...

    Price of New Vehicles

As others have mentioned, the shortage of cars is the perfect storm of supply chain issues. As a result, discounting has all but stopped. This will not last forever, but it will last at least several more months. Even when production returns to normal, it will take a year or more to get back...
