    Ukrainian trains still running

Here is an excellent video of a vlogger riding the train to get out of Ukraine after the war began.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Canadians were allowed to fly to the United States well before Canada allowed Americans to enter. The article is addressing the land border. To really open up travel, Canada needs to drop its testing requirement. As of March an antigen test will be sufficient, but it's still a pain in the...

When is Sleeping Car returning to WAS-BOS overnight train?

It's possible that very few rooms would be occupied south of Washington, DC. If that is the case, I can understand why Amtrak would not want to pay a sleeper attendant for that portion of the route.

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

I am definitely annoyed that Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier have dropped their weight limit from 50 pounds to 40 pounds for checked bags. Anything over 40 pounds incurs an extra fee.

    Trip Report: Albany to Chicago

Our trip from Albany to Chicago went off without a hitch. The train was on time. Our Viewliner II bedroom B was very nice. The toilet flushing noise wasn't bad. It certainly didn't wake me up at night. My one complaint is that the public showers weren't working in either sleeper car. One...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

Are they on the eastbound EB that is over 8 hours late today?

Merger of Frontier and Spirit Airlines

Most analysts do not expect that to happen. While the fleet is consistent, Allegiant's route map does not fit as well. I've never flown Allegiant, but I admire their scrappiness.

    Location of Sleepers in Consist

It's one of those issues that people will always have different opinions about. (Similar to toilets in Viewliner roomettes.) I personally like the sleeper to be at the rear of the train, which is why I always book the New York section of the Lake Shore Limited when I board in Albany.

    Superliner Bedroom C?

There is no bedroom D or E on the Lake Shore Limited. This is because the Lake Shore Limited uses Viewliner cars rather than Superliner cars. Bedroom B on the Lake Shore Limited is an excellent choice. The odds are extremely likely that the couch in Bedroom B will face forward. Here is a...

    Location of Sleepers in Consist

Agreed. I’m convinced that it’s mostly a myth, especially on a train with only ten or so cars.

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

It’s a chart that is labeled “2021 On Time Performance.” And yet it omits several months worth of data. An odd source to cite, for sure. Getting back to the topic at hand, do you take issue with my contention that it is a good thing that people with less privilege have travel options by...

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

What’s odd is that a chart for all of 2021 used data that only started on June 1.

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

Oh, you and I agree. I prefer to fly legacy carriers. But you and I come from a place of privilege where we can afford to pay more for added conveniences. Not everyone comes from the place that we do, and they deserve a choice too. I used official government data when I gave the rankings...

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

If one is concerned with the consequences of a delay, it makes perfect sense to assess the overall likelihood of a delay. Put another way, I would rather fly an airline that is late 1% of the time, but is horrible at dealing with delays, than an airline that is late 75% of the time but is...

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

Spirit was 3rd for on time performance in 2020. Frontier was 6th. They were both ahead of United, American and JetBlue. That said, because they don't embrace the hub system like legacy carriers do, a cancelled flight can lead to bigger problems. But this is the trade-off that comes with the...

    Bid Up for Sleeper room

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

I have priced a few ULCC fares, and by the time I add some of their "options", the price is not that different than what the legacy carriers are charging. I don't mind some aspects being unbundled for a fee - such as choosing your own seat in advance. But some of the fees are just absurd...

    Chicago transit help

Normally I don't need an extra trip when coming in from O'Hare, but it is worth getting the 1-day pass just in case.

    Chicago transit help

One final question. A 1-day CTA pass is $5. A single fare originating from O'Hare is $5. Can you use a 1-day pass to originate travel on the Blue Line at O'Hare?
