    What should Amtrak change?

Tell that to all of the people who, for example, connect through JFK with a final destination somewhere else along the corridor.

    What should Amtrak change?

If we are serious about eliminating air travel along the Northeast Corridor, we need to build much better rail connections to the airports.

    Auto Train service expansion?

It is an objective fact that a vehicle that is properly equipped with good snow tires is going to outperform a vehicle with all season tires in snowy conditions. That can be a scary lesson to learn at Eisenhower Pass in a snowstorm. This, and the ability to haul lots of gear, is why I see many...

    Auto Train service expansion?

I am thinking in particular of skiers. Skiers want snow tires and a vehicle big enough to hold all of their gear. Most families want a ski rack. Sorry, but when it is actively snowing, a rental car with all season tires doesn't hold a candle to a vehicle with snow tires. Driving in Colorado...

    Auto Train service expansion?

Logistics aside, I can see a winter train from Chicago to Denver working. Unlike in Florida where rental cars work just fine, a rental car in ski country is not ideal. One catch is that people would want to be able to have ski carriers on the roof of their vehicle.

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

Especially if you have been to cultures where there is no tipping, such as Japan. The quality of service in Japan is world class, all without tips. In most jobs, tips are now an expectation rather than a genuine token of appreciation for excellent service. Which really defeats the whole...

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

The article says that Amtrak did not provide the ticket, so I don't think that they were behind the article.

Amtrak considering shifting Credit-Card Portfolio away from BofA

Understood. My point was that spending points makes me more willing to splurge than spending actual dollars. Illogical, I know, since the points have a value, but it's just the way my brain is wired. For example, I am taking my son on a trip to Chicago next month. I upgraded to a bedroom...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

Or it can be seen as a sign that you are financially prosperous and that you want better service than those who are less financially well off. This is especially true if you can afford to tip handsomely at the beginning of the trip, which is one reason that I always tip at the end. This also...

Amtrak considering shifting Credit-Card Portfolio away from BofA

Definitely an indication of what may be coming for those of us who hold a BoA Amtrak card. I know it's illogical, but I prefer a card that allows me to splurge on something rather than a card that gives me cash back. I have a much easier time spending points on a $1,000 Amtrak trip than I...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

I definitely agree with you. There is a long tradition of tipping these railroad employees. The difference is that, unlike current Amtrak employees, they were not paid a livable wage and needed to rely on tips to earn enough to make a living. Amtrak employees are fortunate that their wages...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

Interesting read - but there is one very important distinction. Amtrak employees are paid much more than $2.13 per hour - unlike the employees that are the basis for the article that you quoted. I still tip on Amtrak (other than the one instance that I mentioned previously), but there is not...

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

There is definitely an interesting debate as to what extent the government and private enterprise have to provide safety and security. I'm not ready for a world in which private companies are left entirely on their own for combating criminality, but I also appreciate that a private company...

Maybe no cellphone coverage is not always a negative for Amtrak?

Fair point. One of the common complaints in this forum is that Amtrak provides sub-standard service compared to European rail carriers. And yet here we have people arguing that Amtrak should go back to the 1970s. Like it or not, cellular connectivity is an expectation in the modern world...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

Interesting. I definitely see a difference between a full service, multi-course, dining experience in the regular dining car and a single delivery of a microwaved meal. But perhaps I am missing something. One attendant didn't even deliver the meal. We had to pick it up at the counter.
