Could Siemens Viaggio/Ventures be the next sleeper car?

Might it be doable to have a bilevel layout with single-level beds (no upper bunk, and a lower ceiling height) on one level, double-level beds (and a higher ceiling height) on the other level? This would add a useful accommodation type: single-bed rooms for single travelers, plus the usual...

Dedicated Sleeper Lounge/Waiting Area in Seattle?

A few years ago when I last traveled there, baggage check at Seattle was free for sleeper passengers, while coach passengers were charged the per-bag fee.

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

Pity their vision doesn't extend to a connection with the SW Chief. :(

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

It can't possibly take significantly more time to take a train from Macon to Atlanta than it does to get through security at the airport, get the flight boarded and off the ground, and then get to Atlanta. In fact, it almost certainly is more time-efficient as well as less expensive to take the...

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

And so should Amtrak. At a lower cost, and vastly better fuel efficiency than many of the routes subsidized by EAS.

upcoming delays in processing AGR credit card points

From an email sent to me yesterday, about my AGR Mastercard: "As a result of system updates, various cardholder benefits may be delayed from April 18 until April 28, including the posting of Amtrak Guest Rewards® points earned with your credit card and point rebates from Amtrak® reward travel...

    Sleeper 9712...Wow!

Any system where the door locks with the key left behind in the room is going to have the SCA up all night opening doors for sleepy passengers who walk down the hall to the bathroom without their key. Not a good scenario.

    Sleeper 9712...Wow!

I don't even want to think about what a mess PIN locks would have been when I was traveling with my elderly father, whose memory was fading. It's not hard to imagine a good many folks locking themselves out of their own rooms if remembering a PIN is required.

    Column in today's New YorkTimes

The comments include a lot more than reminiscences. Lots of support for the value of a national rail system, both economically and as a shared experience in rancorous times.

Roomette Booked for One: Spouse Joins After Booking?

Sometimes it is. A clever librarian once arranged an (unclassified) interlibrary loan for me from the CIA's library in Langley.

Why Such High Prices for The Silvers in February 2022?

Maximizing revenues involves multiple factors, some of them conflicting: You don't want short-haul passengers to block out so many long-haul passengers that it's "too" costly--but you also don't want to permanently discourage short-haul passengers. You also shouldn't price sleepers so high as to...

My first post vaccination Amtrak trip -- where to?

Atmosphere and history. It's touted at "America's oldest, continuously operated bar." See more here.

Why Such High Prices for The Silvers in February 2022?

And when the projected travel boom is over, the folks who can afford sky-high pricing will move on to something else. And everyone else, including long-time Amtrak customers, will have moved on during the price spike and won't come back. Short-term greed can indeed result in long-term loss that...

Why Such High Prices for The Silvers in February 2022?

Amen. If Amtrak wants to create a sky-high-priced, soak-the-rich class of sleeper service, that needs to be something ADDITIONAL to the existing classes of service. Passengers who aren't filthy rich still need a lie-flat sleeping option that's priced higher than coach but not out of reach to...

Roomette Booked for One: Spouse Joins After Booking?

Call AGR and ask to have your wife added to your ticket. They'll charge you points for her "open sleeper" fare; you've already paid for yourself and the roomette. (I've done this before, IIRC, as recently as last fall.) Edit to add: I think Amtrak's currently running a...

    Meals in the room?

I wouldn't say "NEVER," but it's been rare in my experience. And that "like" I gave your post doesn't apply to its last sentence, which I think is uncalled for.

Inaugural run of the new "Night Owl"

Do the folks who write this stuff ever actually see the trains, or only the text written years ago already, when "upgraded bedding" was promised to be coming soon?

Figuring out how far to ride the eastbound Cardinal

I'd say either Charlottesville (for the reasons RebelRider cited--it's very walkable and pleasant, with a wide variety of good food options) or Alexandria. The stop in Alexandria is at King Street in Old Town. a very pleasant walk to the river through an old residential district with a variety...

Republican coalition against Mobile Amtrak service

Look at the title of this thread and it all makes sense: "Republican coalition against Amtrak Mobile service." They see that Democrats support it, so they must oppose it. That's about as much "reasoning" as Republican politicians have needed to exercise in recent years, especially at the...
