    Pet Peeves

Perhaps unintelligible announcements are one of those NYC inconveniences that have lingered so long that they've become traditions.

    Amtrak delays

Amtrak delays rise with travel demand as summer season booms: Amtrak passengers are getting their share of misery – from delays to cancellations and long waits in customer service lines Washington Post 7/22/22

NCDOT studies improving Amtrak service in NC

There's no station building or place to put one downtown. The tracks still in use by freight trains run along the river, making a station there more likely. And rather than Wilmington, it'd be most useful for a train at Asheville to connect to Amtrak's network leading to Washington and the NE...

NCDOT studies improving Amtrak service in NC

NCDOT officials conducting study on bringing passenger rail service to Asheville WLOS.com 7/20/22 "study was fueled by the proposal Amtrak released last year which included Asheville as a potential destination.... The study is looking at the type of service that might be offered, what times it...

How much do departure and arrival times figure in your Amtrak trip planning?

If you have the time for it, consider stopping for the night somewhere north of LA (Santa Barbara?) then continuing on the coastal route in a Surfliner the next morning.

How much do departure and arrival times figure in your Amtrak trip planning?

Made even more inconvenient by the Crescent's late arrival into DC, now well into the afternoon rather than mid-morning.

    Crescent operations and schedule performance

The central problem with all of these schedule and crew time-related issues is the failure of dispatchers to give priority to Amtrak between NOL and ATL, compounded by freight railroad failure to build sidings long enough to fit the trains they choose to run. The schedule was already generously...

Will Amtrak use Viewliners on the LD Western Trains?

    Unfortunately, that sounds wildly optimistic.

    Booking online on Amtrak website

That's a good plan if it's still allowed and going to a staffed station is reasonably convenient for you. For the increasing number of us who live a half-day drive or more from the nearest staffed station, not so good.

    Tipping on Amtrak

Then they deserve not only no tip but also a reprimand from Amtrak management.

Pacific Surfliner BC will not have complimentary access to Metropolitan Lounge as of 7/15/22

Is it possible for non-sleeper passengers to day-check baggage at LAUS? Parking baggage at the lounge while walking around downtown between trains has been the highest and best use of the Metropolitan Lounge for myself at least.

Safety and environmental issues with Amtrak's Flex Dining concept

Thanks for posting, and for caring. Welcome to AU!

    Timetables/Flag Stops

No. I want them to print it and have it available for passengers to pick up on trains and in stations. This used to be called marketing.

    Timetables/Flag Stops

My copy of that 2016 printed timetable will remain in my possession until it's pried from my cold, dead hands. :) Even if the departure/arrival times are no longer accurate, it's HUGELY helpful to be able to see the LD network's routes and approximate timing. Why, oh why won't Amtrak at least...

Price buckets for trip summer 2023?

I've been watching the Capitol Ltd for mid-November (four months out), and for the past month or so it's been stuck at $630 for a roomette, with a senior discount. It's also showing only 10% of the train's seats sold for the date I'm looking. ☹️ A few weeks ago, the Cardinal was going for $495...

How much do departure and arrival times figure in your Amtrak trip planning?

Since the Crescent's scheduled has changed to have such awful calling times, especially northbound, at the nearest station to me (a 2-3 hour drive away), I won't use it anymore for a roundtrip either to Washington or to New Orleans. Amtrak travel for me now only happens as part of a trip...

Should I bring my Passport while traveling on Amtrak?

In general, you're right. But I've experienced exceptions, notably one border agent whose first words on looking at my passport were "Welcome home." I wish that were SOP.

    Crescent operations and schedule performance

With that much schedule padding, shouldn't Amtrak have negotiated a better schedule than the one we're stuck with now?

    Bookings to Burlington Not Possible?

Have any of you trying to book Burlington service online tried to CALL Amtrak instead? If so, please let us know your experience. Edit to add: Yes, this should be doable online---bad on Amtrak for not making it so. But it still begs the question: Is the problem with the online booking system...

    Crescent operations and schedule performance

Perhaps "whatever little there is south of Atlanta" is so little because the schedule is awful and the OTP is so poor. In addition to poor connectivity with other trains in NOL.
