Amtrak Mask Mandate - Practical Discussion

From a ticket issued today, for travel in July: "Neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, face shields and masks containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind do not qualify as acceptable face coverings."

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

Leaving aside the awful new calling times ATL-CLT, the new schedule averages about 43 MPH end-to-end. Is this really the best that Amtrak could negotiate with the rail owners?

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

I feel your pain--and then some. Hinton's a half day drive from where I live. Greenville about as close as Toccoa (somewhat over 2 hours)--and with post-midnight calling times at those stations, I'm just not gonna be able to talk myself (or my husband) into going there anymore. Still unsure...

Could Siemens Viaggio/Ventures be the next sleeper car?

Decades ago, the Former Guy assaulted a woman on an airplane--she said it was like being groped by an octopus. She'd been upgraded to a first-class seat next to him, and left in a hurry. Years later, at a charity event, he recognized her and said "You're the xxxx from the airplane!" I heard her...

    Flynn article

How about we work on getting decent frequencies on reliable, non-HSR trains to all these places (and points in between) ... and then maybe add HSR?

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

I'm baffled at the notion that Amtrak's schedules "need" to be reworked and made still longer so that host railroads can accommodate them. Don't they all already have a heckuva lot of padding? Certainly the Crescent does.

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

Not only the business market. Everyone who uses the train at stations from Atlanta to Charlotte will have to plan to board past midnight.

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

Atlanta's become pretty grim northbound for anyone wanting to keep appointments on day of arrival: Depart 11:29PM (IF it's on time, and who the heck wants to be hanging out in the ATL station at that hour), and arrive DC 2:12PM, with Philly and NY obviously later. Lose most or all of a workday...

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

I dunno about connections, but it might mean I'm no longer an Amtrak customer. When I need to drive more than 2 hours to get to an Amtrak station (either Toccoa or Greenville, SC), and they make the times for the one train a day each way even more awful than they were ... at some point, it's...

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

Just received an "updated" ticket by email from Amtrak for my upcoming trip between TCA (Toccoa, GA) and Alexandria/DC, July 2 and July 5. Coming back, it's an improvement AFAIC: Leave DC same time, arrive Toccoa half an hour later than usual, at 6:45AM. Going there, it's possibly a deal...

Differences Between Today's Timetable, and 1994's Timetable.

It's well worth (re)stating "So fix OTP!" Even on this board, discussion tends to assume that bad OTP, due primarily but not entirely to freight interference, is something that Will Never Change. Restoring reasonably reliable OTP doesn't require changing the laws of physics. And it's probably...

The COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card as a Travel Document

One of the factors is winter. We seem to be more vulnerable to Covid in cold weather with dry indoor air. Not so much of that in Florida.

Comparing Amtrak B/R fare to First Class Air Fare

Actually, I think it's farther divorced from reality to believe that public services must turn a profit.

    Pre-Selection of Meals

I'd guess it has something to do with, if you're going to be on a train for a day or two or three, you'll need to eat. 🤔 Decent quality of food, with options that can be chosen for healthfulness and to meet common dietary restrictions, is a necessity when you've got passengers on a train through...

Washington Post satire column with Amtrak reference.

From an Alexandra Petri column published earlier this week: “Joe Biden is coming for everyone’s meat!” Chicken Little exclaimed. “He is going to rip all the hamburgers off the grills, and if you are eating more than your allotted steak, he is going to fling you to his hand-reared pack of hungry...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

When I'm traveling on Amtrak, I stretch the truth a bit and let people know that phone/internet can't be relied upon. I promise to check voice and emails once a day, and consider myself off the hook. Lack of cell/internet service is a much-loved feature of Amtrak as far as I'm concerned.

Is it all eticketing now or can I still get paper ticket?

You can also print out your eTicket. Highly recommended--a paper copy works even when your phone doesn't. ☺

Comparing a LD Amtrak Coach Fares to Air travel

Disagree about the LD network: It should be good BOTH for end-to-end riders (joyful or not) AND for folks traveling shorter distances along each route. And the routes should interconnect with reasonable transfers, so that someone can travel (for example) from Creston, IA, to South Bend, IN...

Need bagel shop recommendations near NYP

You can't possibly be that old. There's been a real interest in bagels and bialys in NYC for at least a century. Especially on the lower East Side.
