someone on my train has an IBEW union logo tee shirt and on the back is a big picture of a UP engine. That is great attire.

I don't have anything booked yet but I hope to do something in early July. Might be the later 77/78 as those trains don't get much attention.

What a waste to purchase those new and then take them off the trains so some after. They are nice. I don't remember the same look the last time I was in a dinner which would have been the summer of 2018 for an anniversary trip on the Crescent from Greensboro to Philly. In the VLII bag/dorm...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Just got back from the dinner car for breakfast on the Crescent. Yes it was a flex meal but I have had worse pancakes and sausage. it was so nice to have a chance to sit in the dinner car and see the views from both sides of the car and with windows . I talked with the attendant and she was...

    Attire on the train?

Well, we decided on jeans with an oxford and no tie for this leg of the trip. I am wearing my Crescent lapel pin.

    Attire on the train?

There is a sitcom episode there. I teach high school physics and chemistry. I wear a tie so little as they get in my way during labs that wearing one at other times doesn't bother me at this point in my life. I likely am not wearing a tie on this trip but I might. It has been interesting to...

    Attire on the train?

I am firmly GenX. there is one station. agent at Greensboro that always wears an oxford tie and vest and the other men are in a polo. the polo is nice enough but the vest and tie is a nice look.

    Attire on the train?

How many of you dress up for a vacation train ride. Riding 2 hours to visit family on the Piedmont and its a shirt and jeans for me. For some reason since my Crescent rides usually mean "vacation" (family lives on the Piedmont and Carolinian routes.) and that seems more special. I like...

    Tipping on Amtrak

What do you tip for a non overnight sleeper for 5-6 hours or less? I assume on the lower end nearer $5.

    Tipping on Amtrak

I usually just lower the top bunk and leave the bottom as seats, though I did change into bed mode on the lower bed last trip just f to do it. It took some work. The worst part is getting the straps for the upper berth in the hooks.

From the article “rail aficionados” sounds so much nicer than rail fan, or foamer. It makes me want to grab a cup of port wine, put on a tweed jacket and read the Financial Times.

    Tipping on Amtrak

Over Memorial Day we had a lounge pass at DC but did not get the bid up as the train was sold out. We used a Red Cap to get early access to the train so wife and I would have seats together. I tipped $10. I think the red cap carried two luggage pieces and I took one. My wife was so glad to...

    Tipping on Amtrak

I was thinking $5 for the short segments with no food nor turn down service. $10 for the one meal in our room and $20 for the multi meal trips and or bed turn down service.. Meal in the dinner is a separate tip. I have never had a grumpy attendant.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

Trains August 1959. Given the talk this week about a new Amtrak facility in Atlanta I note an article about the Atlanta Terminal Station in this issue with some nice pictures.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

Trains June 1959. Part of letter to editor. Passenger trains and shotguns I suppose you had your feet braced to receive a great many irate letters fol lowing release of the April Trains. I was all prepared to fire a hot letter at you, for I assumed that Trains would lay the major blame for the...

Also a comment about a plan to merge all the Chicago passenger trains into one facility being presented by the mayor.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

Trains, May 1959 cover is very existential, "What is a Railroad?" There is an ad on page 54-55 about the Budd slumbercoaches and their occupancy rates. Great picture of their outside but a missed opportunity to have a great picture of the inside, though there is a small picture.

    Tipping on Amtrak

Starting a trip in a few days with 5 segments and all in roomette or bedroom on VL1 or VL2. I am curious how much you would tip for my own calibration. I'll post my thoughts after I read a few replies. Do you have a set tip or does it change based on what is done with unplanned extra meals due...

I guess you could not do a bid up with a rail pass. Either a rail pass or buy a ticket and then bid up for that segment. Correct?
