    Midwest Venture introduction

Traveling on the Wolverine 352 in coach today, but they let coach passengers sit in one of the two business class cars. The business class seat is a little stiff compared to older cars, but the leg room and sheer width are amazing. And each seat comes with 2 traditional power outlets and 2 USBs...

    Chicago Union Station Hiawatha Lounge

I got the chance to wait in here for a while, waiting for a replacement bus for the Wolverine. This was earlier this month.

“Secret” lounge at Chicago Union Station

So a few weeks ago, I was taking Wolverine 350 from Chicago to Kalamazoo. Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to a freight derailment. So Amtrak put us on buses instead. We first waited in the regular ugly waiting area by the south gates. But then they called all the passengers for the 350 and...

Winter Park (Colorado) Express is back

Not all at the same time, at least. I saw a bunch in Denver yesterday.

    Midwest Venture introduction

I’m on the (delayed) 350 right now. It’s an Amfleet Business/Cafe, 1 Venture, and 3 Horizons. And here’s a reason to appreciate the Venture car: the vestibules are snow-free. The other photos are of the Horizon cars on this same train. Kind of absurd how much snow can accumulate inside a train...

    Midwest Venture introduction

I still saw a bunch the Business class cars together in the yard at Chicago today. I don’t think they’re running yet. From the outside they don’t look very different from the coach cars. What I’m curious about is the eventual introduction of the cab cars. I don’t know what the timeline is on those.

South West Chief #4 interesting look

I noticed them outside Union Station this afternoon! A very strange sight, these Metrolink cars attached to the Midwest Ventures. Sounds like we’ll be seeing more of them, if at least 50 are being refurbished?

Happy to see the 350 and 355 back in general too.

    Midwest Venture introduction

The Ventures are running on the Pere Marquette now! Started yesterday. Right now it’s an Amfleet Business/Cafe and two Ventures. Steps work just fine.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

So earlier messages said the Wolverine 350 would be cancelled until the 16th, and resume the 17th. I was hoping to visit some family in Michigan and tried to book the 350 on the 17th. Both on the desktop website and the app, it’s still not showing up. I tried some dates later the next week, but...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Oh, I just noticed that the cancellations begin Monday, so tomorrow will be safe. Still, it’s definitely very annoying for a lot of people. The 350 is always packed. What’s strange to me is that the Amtrak app doesn’t say when the cancellations start, I had to find that out here.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Guess what train I was supposed to get on tomorrow morning… Do you think I have a shot at getting a refund? Edit: realizing now that the cancellations don’t start until Monday.

Leaving items at seat when going to Cafe or Restroom?

I just leave my bags at my seat to go to the lounge or cafe. What I normally do is stroll back to my seat when we reach a station stop, just to be safe and to stretch my legs. Of course, I haven’t been on the Surfliner, but I assume the stops are a little closer together than on the Southwest...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

It was just the Charger. I’ve been on plenty of trains with a P42, I think if the two were coupled together all you would hear is the P42.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I believe there was, at least 4 rooms were called to pick up their meals, which I could see (and smell) them eat in the observation car.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

Rode the CONO yesterday and #304 was pulling us. I was amazed at how quiet they are when idling at stations.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I was on the City of New Orleans yesterday, from Chicago to Champaign. I noticed that after we left Chicago, they would call two sleepers at a time to come pick up their meal from the cafe and eat it in the SSL. They also didn’t open the cafe to coach passengers until all the sleepers had...

    Empire Builder discussion

As someone who travels exclusively in coach, I can’t imagine they would do this. The SSL is that one cool extra that is available to everyone. It’s what makes an Amtrak long-distance train unique compared to other trains and modes of transportation. When I was on the Chief, it was pretty...

    Hello

Hi everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Thom. I live in Chicago now, but have previously lived in Japan and the Netherlands. I'd say my love for trains comes from being a commuter in those countries. Now that I live in the states, I grown more and more interested in Amtrak and...

    Midwest Venture introduction

That's not really a fair summary of this conversation. Nobody here is up all night worrying about it. The issue is that both the locomotives and the cars carry a livery that's different from the regular Amtrak fleet, to distinguish it as the Amtrak Midwest product. So when they are just off by...
