All routes through Virginia are brutal!

Yes, we just rode the Crescent twice and the Cardinal, and we were on time. It varies.

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

This. And this. Please don't mess with the new Viewliners.

Oh, GML! Now I'll worry the next time I leave my $400,000 watch in my luggage. You've burst my bubble and spoiled the Amtrak experience forever.

What is it about a roomette?

My friend and I enjoyed our roomettes, but must acknowledge that we enjoyed our bedrooms ever more. We developed a "system" for the roomettes--took turns opening our bags at night, hung the next day's clothes on the racks, and my friend stood on the little toilet to get to the mirror to put on...

    amtrak ride

I second the suggestion to not look out at things close to the train, but look farther away. I've only traveled on one Superliner (double decker train), and found the sway on the top level to be noticeably more than on the single level trains, but not enough to bother us. A lower level seat or...

I always take my phone and small camera in my purse, and usually I take my other electronics (handheld GPS, Kindle or small netbook) if I have a medium sized purse. On my last trip, I only brought a small purse so I left my Kindle and GPS inside my suitcase, and didn't bring my netbook on the...

Question about garbage in sleeper car?

Good idea especially if you bring food aboard. Actually, we had very, very little trash (wrapper from the soap, etc.), so the little trash container was adequate except for Amanda's sandwich container.

Visiting the US, routing suggestions please

I'd second Jim's suggestions to consider the Grand Canyon, which is beautiful, truly unique, and quite awesome. Las Vegas is attractive in its own way, but if I could only visit one of the two, the Grand Canyon wins by a mile imo. I also agree with avoiding New Orleans during Mardi Gras time...

    short notice trip change?

I also wonder how much business they lose when potential passengers just take the website at its word. Those unfamiliar with Amtrak would have no reason to think phoning would make any difference.

Question about garbage in sleeper car?

I agree that the trash receptacles in all the sleepers are very small and ours were not emptied during our trip. They are handy for very small items. As for the larger can by the coffee station: Our recent four-train trip went just about perfectly, but we did experience a minor trash...

Which direction for the Californian Zephyr?

Someone on the forum who'd done the trip both ways, don't recall who, once told me that one disadvantage of the east-bound CZ is that if the train is running late, it might be dark by the time you reach the very good scenery just west of Denver. With a late winter trip, the daylight hours will...

    Amtrak Shop

My friend and I looked for a train or Amtrak tee in both WAS and CHI station shops and didn't see any, only shirts featuring the cities. We didn't make a thorough search, so I can't say with certainty that there are none there, however.

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

The Cardinal still had two sleepers on July 27.

    16 year old riding alone

OK, I said I was done, but the tomatoes coming through my screen are splattering my shirt. :) This isn't about ID's actually; it's about reprimanding me for things I didn't say. If these posts are intended for me (apparently, as I'm the poster previous to them), once again I'm not...

California Zephyr from SLC to Chicago

While I like a sleeper for overnight travel, many people do just fine overnight in coach. For full day trips, hubby and I always rode coach before his medical problems started, and it has its advantages just as sleeper does. The car is spacious and you can see out both sides of the train in...

Following up with Amtrak Customer Relations Department?

The one time we phoned to make Amtrak aware of a problematic issue, we received a voucher by mail even though we had not requested any compensation and had stated such. Any time I've phoned with questions or complimentary remarks, the agents were courteous and helpful. I understand that not...

    16 year old riding alone

Ryan, I'm not wanting to "require IDs everywhere." I'm just saying that having to show my ID on my recent Amtrak trip is no big deal to me, nor are the other times I'm required to show it. For the three examples I gave, the purpose is to ascertain that I'm the person I claim to be, and Aldrich...

    16 year old riding alone

I'm not sure I personally know any adult who doesn't have an ID, or at least I've never heard anyone complain. The examples you give are exceptions. Most people's birth records aren't lost and most people already have a birth certificate or could easily obtain a copy. I don't think ID is that...

    New Orleans Amtrak Station Area

Are you crazy?? *sigh* :giggle: You kids...!!! MiRider: Thanks for the info on the station streetcar. I don't think that stop was there the last time we visited NOL, which has been about three years ago. I like the streetcars and will check that out next time.
