Piedmont and North Carolina DOT Service discussion

One train set will make two round trips: 71/72 and 77/78. One train set will make one round trip: 73/74. One other train set will also make one round trip: 75/76. All start and end in Raleigh each day. jb

The station status boards (solari, split-flap) are not working. Instead, choose the "static" option for the time being. jb

Yes - a shared server. A program of mine evidently ran away (infinite loop (?)) and took too much bandwidth away from the other users. So the web hosting company shut it down. They only got it back up today, after 11 days. In the meantime, it's running on another shared server. (I fixed the...

    Amtrak Status Maps

Well, after 10 days my web hosting company still can't seem to get its act together. So, I have temporarily moved everything over to a temporary website. So, here's what you need to do: If you've got any links or bookmarks referring to "dixielandsoftware.net", please change that part of the...

    Amtrak Status Maps

Update. Things aren't going very well. The support people aren't communicating very well with each other or with me. If they miss getting things back online tomorrow, the problem will slide out to Monday. To say the least, I'm very disappointed in them. jb

The commercial server that I use is having issues. I opened a ticket this morning. It's being escalated. They indicate the problem should be resolved within two business days. jb

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

At MP 47.0 (West Port Morris) Brooklyn Rd. used to cross under the tracks. After the tracks were removed, so was the underpass. If the tracks are completed at that point, either the crossing will be at grade, or else the underpass will need to be recreated. Right now the roadway is at the...

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

Back when the Lake Cities Express and the Phoebe Snow ran, they ran down the M&E with no trouble, and arguably, there were more trains running then than there are now. And furthermore, they ran east from points far west of Scranton, whereas the proposed service is starting and terminating in...

PTC "Server disruption" service issue (March 2023)

Now the Auto Trains, 52/53 of 3/25 are canceled. Is that part of the PTC mess? jb

PTC "Server disruption" service issue (March 2023)

So the failure in this case, whatever it is, is particular to one freight railroad only? Which one? jb

PTC "Server disruption" service issue (March 2023)

Do we know what actually failed and whose it is and why (evidently) there is no redundancy built in? jb

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

In the youtube videos about "The Cutoff", the history of the construction is explained. The goal was to not have any tunnels at all, but the geologists of the time convinced management that the better way was to tunnel through it rather than to try and remove it. Recently, NJT is considering...

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

Also, there's the little matter of the Roseville Tunnel, west of Port Morris. It's crumbling and needs to be rebuilt. It can't be daylighted (easily) because the track sits on an anticline. jb

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

The amalgam is the DL&W from Denville to Mountain View and then the Erie Greenwood Lake from there down to Upper Montclair. We used to call the latter part the "Burma Road" because of the hills and curves. The connection between the two at Mountain View is a nasty curve as well. jb
