You probably should reserve space well in advance of any Red Sox games. My daughter tells me that the train sells out on Red Sox game days.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

In the past, we have had great meals on the Lake Shore, both with traditional dining and diner-lite. Three meals if you are a Boston sleeping car passenger. I used to look forward to taking that train. With flex meals I no longer look forward to the Lake Shore. It is just something to...

    Cardinal discussion

I doubt that was the case here as the officer seemed to be much closer to retirement age than Vietnam age. Of course perhaps his concern was legitimate. Perhaps in the past, thugs had emerged from the darkness. I doubt there were motion detector lights at the station in Indianapolis in 1972...

    Cardinal discussion

I have only been to Indianapolis once and that was in 1972 as a passenger on the Floridian from Chicago to Nashville. I don't know if the station used in Indianapolis then is the same as the one used today. A few of us stepped off the train for some fresh air. Aside from a few lights at the...

    Cardinal discussion

From the recent discussion of Cincinnati and Indianapolis, it sounds like we have declined to third-world railroading at its best. Given the size of those communities, it is rather shocking. Perhaps Scouts could be enlisted to assist passengers with mobility issues to and from the platform.

    Amtrak consists 2024

In my experience it would be very unusual to have a transdorm in the middle of the consist as in this example. The transdorm is almost always at the front end just behind the locomotives or just behind the baggage car if there is one. If a transdorm was being hauled deadhead (out of service)...

I seem to enjoy the southbound trip better but I don't have a great reason for this.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

There was a new viewliner II diner (No. 68018-Montpelier) on the Crescent on our trip in May 2019 providing full traditional dining and those meals were just delicious. That is the only trip we have taken with a viewliner II diner being used as it was originally designed. A few days later we...

    Tipping on Amtrak

I doubt that this occurs. I have found that many sleeping car attendants don't seem to give a hoot about the tips probably because they are well paid and the tips do not add much to their income. Others may have had different experiences.

Thanks for posting those interesting statistics. It would also be interesting to see similar statistics regarding the Trudeau-Pepin cuts in 1981 if anyone can locate them.

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

It appears from the train status site that No. 8 was running about 2 hours late heading into Chicago but then was apparently delayed for an additional 2 hours due to the fire and arrived in Chicago 4 hours late at 8:45 p.m. yesterday

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

I understand that there were numerous delays in Chicago yesterday, June 18, caused by a warehouse fire which caused tracks to be closed. Track was reopened at 8:30 p.m. I understand. Hopefully someone has more details. I understand that 8 and other trains were delayed for hours.

I eat at home, sometimes good healthy food, sometimes not. But I am not paying $600 and up for the home experience.

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

I hope you have a great trip and I hope you do post a report. We just never seem to get many trip reports about that train so it would be great to have a current report.

    VIA Ocean discussion

No, I should have been clearer. The turntable that I am speaking about, which was used as late as the 1980s, was right at the VIA station in Halifax. It was still in use as late as 1987. It was, if you were in the station and facing the tracks, at the immediate left. It had been in use for...

For starters, try this: https://groups.io/g/Canadian-Passenger-Rail This group is the successor to the Canadian-Passenger-Rail yahoogroup. There are also several facebook groups which a search should turn up.

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

It appears that the Hotel Camino Real in El Paso has changed hands (and name) and is now the Hotel Paso Del Norte, a Marriott hotel. Has anyone stayed there under the new ownership and can post a review? It is not right at the Amtrak station in El Paso but when I stayed there I found that it...

    Amtrak Management issues

I think that those of us who participate in Canadian Passenger rail lists find this to be not true as Amtrak 25 has noted.

    Amtrak Management issues

Granted that Amtrak primarily operates its P42 locomotives on long distance trains and VIA uses its P42s in corridor service, I have never understood why Amtrak has occasional to regular breakdowns of its P42 en route while VIA's P42s seem to operate problem-free. I have assumed that it is a...

    Amtrak Management issues

I have been well aware of the tight labor market. I was not aware that Amtrak was offering extremely generous signing bonuses and I don't recall that it has been discussed on this list or any other list that I read. Thanks for pointing that out. Just how generous were these signing bonuses?
