    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Regarding the Texas Eagle from Chicago to LA, I mentioned in an earlier post that up until a year ago low bucket was $623 and that fare was available on many dates. I have no idea what low bucket is now, but the lowest I can find for the next 11 months is $989, obviously a medium to high bucket...

The Crescent and the Eagle are the two longest trains still stuck with flex.?Traditional dining should be on both these trains.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

C’mon! It’s been six years since flex reared its ugly head. No cooks anywhere? Does it take years to train them? One excuse after another. Truth is Amtrak does not care one iota about the pitiful Eagle and are content to let it stay in it’s current condition..flex and no sightseer. Prices...

    Texas Eagle discussion

Haven’t heard anything. A travesty flex food and a lack of a sightseer car are STILL on a 32 hour trip. Pathetic

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Thanks for the analysis. As long as sleepers remain full, nothing will change. I also wonder if there are people like me who would pay the $600 fare and will not pay the $960 fare? Unfortunately I would imagine there are more that would pay it. One of Amtrak’s bargains was leaving from...

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Up until a year ago The Texas Eagle from Chicago to LA was $600 senior one person roomette. Low bucket. Anticipating another trip I checked every date through the next 11 months and the lowest I could find was $960. I could see a minor increase in prices, but this is insane.

    And no sightseer car.

Still Flex. Just a nicer setting

Beautiful dining car. Like the Lake Shore Limited, still flex. Cafe car food is an improvement

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

When the TE low bucket roomette was $623 just six months ago, that low bucket could be found on many dates. As I mentioned in an earlier post,I have checked every date for eleven months and the lowest I could find was $989. They still had only one sleeper at $623 . The SW Chief was $600, then...

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The Texas Eagle shows a low bucket at $706 for a roomette if I am reading that correctly. Every date I have punched in, and I did almost every date for the next eleven months shows no lower than $989. Up until a year ago low bucket on the TE was $623, and that fare showed up frequently.

Food from the cafe car is better than any flex meal. If Amtrak charges anything over $5 for a flex meal it’s overcharging. Can’t imagine why any Coach passenger would actually pay to eat a reheated frozen dinner

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

A step up from flex.At least you have a choice of sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs. Going from San Antonio to New York is three days of flex. Inhuman

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Traditional dining is on all the Western trains except The Texas Eagle. It’s also on The Silvers. Flex food(can’t call it dining) is served on The Cardinal, The Crescent, Texas Eagle,Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited. The City of New Orleans has sleeper passengers choose from the cafe car...

    Fares that don't make sense

$731 one person roomette is the lowest price I could find between Seattle and LA, Not sure if that is low bucket or not. Have a feeling it is.

    Fares that don't make sense

Another one night train,The Coast Starlight is now charging close to $800 for a one person roomette. That’s the lowest I could find checking multiple dates. This is getting ridiculous

    Fares that don't make sense

Always great to find low bucket. They are getting harder and harder to find. Like you,I won’t pay more than $650 for any Western trip from Chicago. Guess I won’t be riding the Southwest Chief again. $767 is the lowest price I can find, checking many dates. Still a relative bargain is the Texas...

That is precisely what is wrong with Amtrak’s inane pricing structure

    Fares that don't make sense

Last year I booked Coach from Portland to LA. Lowest price on roomettes were almost $700. I did a bid up of $250, about $40 more than the minimum. With the Coach fare of $95 that put the entire trip at $345. I got the bid up. This is happening quite a bit,I would imagine.

    Fares that don't make sense

Amtrak’s pricing has gone “off the rails”. Call it dynamic pricing, what the market will allow or whatever, as a dedicated Amtrak rider for decades, I m finding I can no longer justify what Amtrak asks. $2000 plus bedrooms from Chicago to the West Coast are routine. Even roomettes have...
