Has to be. Cheapest roomette is around $600 and low or second lowest bucket rarely shows up anymore.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

The Surfliner is the gold standard of Business Class. If only the other BC cars on the other trains were as good. A shame there is no uniform standard. Same with the food and drink offerings at the Moynihan lounge. Every other lounge pales in comparison

And that’s why Amtrak can charge over $600 for a roomette for one person from Chicago to DC and people will actually pay that outrageous fare!

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Except for an occasional EB two days out when they couldn’t sell it at what they wanted,I am rarely finding any low bucket or second to lowest buckets on any train on any day. Up until a couple of weeks ago I would find several low buckets on roomettes on the Eagle from LA to Chicago for $623...

That $45 fee gets you an appetizer Alcoholic beverage and dessert. The $28.50 didn’t include those extras.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Thought of another one. Columbus WI to LA and return. Three zones, and you went on the Builder,Starlight, Southwest Chief with an overnight in Chicago and back to Columbus. Think you were allowed an overnight.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

The Toledo Shuffle. We used to drive seven hours to catch the Capitol Limited in Toledo. From there West it was two zones to the West Coast. That ended in 2016. I took one of the last trips using Zones. LA to Ft. Lauderdale. Coach to El Paso and in El Paso, a zone stop 20,000 points to Ft...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Amtrak automatically gave me the vouchers. I was pleased.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Better to go Southbound so the anticipation of the Sunset is there. Having ridden every long distance train multiple times since 1990, these days I base my travels solely on price. I still love riding and the Eagle wins out every time. My last two trips on the Zephyr and Eagle were 10 to 11...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

The Texas Eagle from Chicago to LA is Amtrak’s longest ride and has the best chance of finding the lowest bucket $623 single roomette. Up until a few years ago I would do circle trips every year using roomettes. Unfortunately trying to find connecting trains with the lowest or second to lowest...

Davis works for me. I stay at the University Inn, a short walk from the station. Excellent place. Usually under $100

    Fares that don't make sense

Always amazed people will pay over $2, yet $3000 for basically a 48 hour trip. Yet, they do and Amtrak will charge it. Wonder if they will reach the $4000 plateau?

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Up until a few years ago I would take circle trips in roomettes using low bucket prices. Unfortunately it is almost impossible these days. I usually did the Texas Eagle/Sunset or the SW Chief,Coast Starlight and Empire Builder. I would do Coach to or from my home base if Harrisburg Pa. The...

How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

Ridden every long distance route multiple times. Have not ridden the Missouri Runner between St Louis and Kansas City or the Heartland Flyer.I think over the years I’ve done every route from Freeport, Maine to San Diego including the Sunset East to Fort Lauderdale and the Desert Wind. Never made...

The Texas Eagle is the last train I would recommend for someone’s introduction to Amtrak long distance travel. Unfortunately, if you are traveling through some of the Nation’s biggest cities, St Louis,Dallas Fort Worth and San Antonio from Chicago that’s your only logical choice.A shame these...

Travel from Vancouver to San Diego advice?

I ve stayed in Ventura. Much lower rates. If you don’t mind Motel 6 it ‘s usually under $100 and is a four block walk from the station. Nothing fancy and adequate. I booked a round trip to Santa Barbara from Ventura for a day last month.

I am on 22 now. My latest journey has been delay after delay. Boarded 422 in LA Wednesday night on time. A broken down freight was ahead of us in Pomona putting us five hours behind. Three more hours behind due to freight traffic. Told we were being bussed to Longview to catch up with 22...

Indeed. It’s one overnight and a morning each direction. Lower the sleeper prices to something reasonable (not $640 or so)from end to end and just eliminate dining. That high bucket for a one person roomette comes up quite often and is simply outrageous for that short a trip. Yeah supply and...

2 terminated in San Antonio because of a stalled freight near Pomona. It lost five hours and three additional the remainder of the way. Passengers were bussed East and North. I am one of them now on a bus bridge to Longview to catch 22 on the way to Chicago. Guess we’ll hear what is going to happen.

Forget flex on the Capitol. How about a Sightseer instead of the diner and sleeper passengers can get their food from the cafe car, included. It’s a short trip and the cafe food is better than flex.
