    Capitol Limited discussion

Considering it’s flex,I’d rather have the Sightseer over a diner on the Capitol

    Capitol Limited discussion

With only one Coach you are guaranteed of 100% capacity on every train. Contrast that to the Pennsylvanian and Pacific Surfliner with at least four coaches, but they are subsidized by their respective states. A shame you are packed in like sardines in Coach on the Capitol Limited. The Coast...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I had one of the last real meals on the Capitol Limited in late May 2018 and a passenger made a speech about how traditional dining was ending and how upset he was. It’s been five years and we are still stuck with this crap. Thanks Anderson and Mica for the most unpopular and ridiculous move in...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

On the Eagle yesterday they handed out the brownie and butter cake in it’s bag, Same dessert for lunch today on the Sunset but it was served on a plate with whipped cream added. They handed me my breakfast sandwich yesterday in its cellophane wrapping. I’ve done the Chicago LA Eagle Sunset quite...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I remember Anderson touting flex dining as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Never heard such a positive spin on one of the worst decisions Amtrak ever made

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

On the Texas Eagle from Chicago to LA and I have had two meals served by a surly attendant. The salmon for dinner was dry and almost inedible, Usually for breakfast I get the continental and I always get the breakfast sandwich and cereal. This morning the attendant says one or the other. I chose...

    Empire Builder discussion

From Seattle to Chicago there is a $588 one person roomette fare on June 8 9 and 10th in case anyone can swing it. The EB is the only route with low buckets so close to departure date. I am sure those three dates were $1259 when first added eleven months ago.

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

I two weeks. No alternate transportation so I changed my San Diego reservation for Ventura for my two days in SoCal. Arriving and departing on the Texas/Sunset from Chicago. Couldn’t pass up a 40% points sale last fall when I booked.

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

I had a reservation from LA to San Diego next Monday. Just got a call from Amtrak saying all Surfliners are canceled, with no alternate transportation,at least for the next two weeks. I did have a reservation in San Diego,so I changed it to Ventura for my two days in SoCal. Arriving on the...

    Texas Eagle discussion

Traditional dining, at least could be returned. Amtrak had a huge job fair a year and a half ago. Could’nt hire any cooks?

    Texas Eagle discussion

The Texas Eagle is Amtrak’s worst long distance train for two reasons. Flex food and no sightseer car, two issues Amtrak could easily rectify but they choose not to

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

A roomette is still a room. It provides a bed and privacy. For one person,it is fine, two a bit tight, but at $3000 for a bedroom, that’s a bit excessive. On the other hand, that $99 Coach fare on the full length of the Zephyr is a good price if you don’t mind sleeping in a seat for three days...

Coast Starlight or Sunset Limited for our next trip?

The Westbound Sunset is the only train I don’t mind being late. One plus is that the Metropolitan Lounge opens when the Sunset arrives and Phillippes opens at 6. I have taken both routes multiple times, The Starlight is the best for dramatic scenery, but as someone who just loves to ride, I...

    Beer in Roomette?

I usually bring those four packs of wine with me. I go to the cafe car and get two cups of ice and consume them before dinner. I like beer, but if you bring a six pack with you, how do you keep them cold? I usually don’t buy alcohol on board because of the price.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The Eagle is 32 hours long,by far the longest journey with flex and no sightseer car. For some reason the Amtrak higher ups regard the TE as an afterthought. Simply pathetic. When all the other Western trains got traditional dining back, the Eagle didn’t. Makes absolutely no sense.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The Capitol Limited,Crescent,Lake Shore Limited,The Cardinal and The Texas Eagle are the holdouts. Wonder if we will ever see traditional dining return to these trains?

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Says it all ..a reasonable and pleasant experience at a reasonable cost. Charging $2000, yet $3000 for a bedroom on a 48 hour trip will scare first time travelers away. Of course many people will pay it, but a great many more won’t.

Analysis of the Gardner/Harris May '23 train rides, intentions, speculations

Ideally, both the Eagle and the Capitol Limited should have a Sightseer. They both used to, but I would pick the Capitol Ltd to be the one train without a Sightseer. Only reason is that the Eagle is almost twice as long and Coach passengers need a place to go to on that long a trip.
