Analysis of the Gardner/Harris May '23 train rides, intentions, speculations

Mr. Harris did not mention how he enjoyed the passing scenery in the Sightseer Car on The Texas Eagle or how wonderful flex dining was on the Cardinal and Eagle.

Analysis of the Gardner/Harris May '23 train rides, intentions, speculations

I m sure they were fed quite well and were no where near flex territory. Would be nice for these higher ups to experience what average passengers experience

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I’ve had three French toast breakfasts and each time I broke a knife and fork trying to cut it. Couldn’t imagine ordering the pancakes or omelettes. Lately on flex trains I have the breakfast sandwich and cereal. At least it’s been consistent.

    Texas Eagle discussion

A change in dining car service? Traditional dining? We can only hope. Hey,while we are talking change how about the return of the Sightseer car?

    Amtrak vs spouse/partner

I introduced my girl friend, now my wife, to long distance train travel many years ago. She enjoys it but there must be a destination. I ride just to ride. She comes with me when we have a vacation planned and I ride alone when I just want to ride, which is more often. It’s a happy medium.

Also for breakfast, the closest of them all Lou Mitchell’s. Think they are closed Monday and Tuesday

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Kind of sad when the food and drink you get in the Moynihan lounge is better than any food you will get on four of the five long distance trains leaving from New York..The Lake Shore,The Cardinal,The Crescent and The Silver Meteor.

    Texas Eagle discussion

About eight years ago there was an “inspection “ train going through the Florida panhandle on the Sunset Limited route. What did that accomplish? Florida obviously does not want to pony up the money to restore train service to the panhandle

Pittsburgh Amtrak Station past, present and future

The Pittsburgh Amtrak station might be the worst of all the major cities. I always dread that four hour wait between the Pennsylvanian and the Capitol Limited, but that is my most direct route to Chicago.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

I know you are defending Amtrak and their pricing. Then again, in the last few weeks I have seen bedrooms go for $1500 or less on the EB with one week’s advance booking and roomettes at $588 low bucket. I have been riding Amtrak in sleepers for decades and I have never seen bedrooms at $2000...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Yes,housing is outrageous as well. Still, paying over $3000 for a 48 hour ride on the Empire Builder is outrageous and obscene. Obviously, you and I won’t pay it. I still maintain that charging that kind of price is price gouging and greed Why can’t Amtrak yield management lower the high bucket...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Charging $3000 plus for a bedroom is outrageous. Yeah the answer supply and demand, right? Amtrak should not be charging that ridiculous price to begin with. It’s pure greed and price gouging at it’s worst and I can’t believe anyone will defend that.Who decides on these prices?

The Eagle takes the cake. A 32 hour ride from Chicago to San Antonio with No sightseer and flex. The Capitol Limited is almost half the length.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

C C Agree. As I have said if people would not pay the high buckets, prices would drop to reasonable. However,if only one person will pay…and you know the rest.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The cafe car has two decent sandwiches on their menu. If, for example you are taking The Texas Eagle and transferring to The Lake Shore that’s three days and two nights of flex. It would be nice to have those sandwiches as an option. Again, seems so obvious.

    Amtrak Coach discussion

I really wish Amtrak would sell you the adjoining seat. Nothing is more uncomfortable and awkward than sharing a seat with no armrest with a stranger on an overnight train.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Amtrak insane pricing continues. This Wednesday a roomette from Sea to Chi is $558 one person senior fare. Maybe the new order to save money on the EB is to book the week you want to leave

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Ideally, if nobody would pay that price it would come down(to earth) and that goes for all the high buckets. Sadly people will pay…and you know the rest. At $3200 I would expect unlimited alchohol, and the finest food prepared by world famous chefs.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Insane prices. New and improved? How about new ways to price gouge?

    Amtrak Coach discussion

Body Odor, very obese people, and generally obnoxious people are enough reasons to shy away from Coach. I really wish Amtrak would let you buy the seat next to you. Happened to me on the Coast Starlight last month. A guy who probably hadn’t bathed in several days was my seatmate on a trip from...
