MI-ChI-NYP-CHI and Home again in MI

Great trip report! I will probably feel emotional too whenever I take my next Amtrak trip. I Haven't traveled outside my local area since before the pandemic. The Hudson river scenery on 49 is great and was a highlight of my own LSL trip. I've seen the blondie get mentioned on a lot of trip...

⁷Austin-NewYork/ A New York State of Mind

Great trip report! Glad you had a good time and were safe. I have been hearing a lot about rising crime on various news sites and even the locals over on city-data forums are concerned about the rise in crime. I hope to one day get back to New York and see Moynihan Train Hall. All these trip...

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

Basically, I had trouble sleeping. Part of this was due to the seats having no neck support, part of it being me not used to sleeping sitting up, part of it was due to the car being hot (this trip happened in late October 2018, so the heat was jacked up), and part of it was due to me getting...

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

One thing I notice when reading trip reports is that those who ride in sleeper tend to have the better experience compared to those who do LD coach. So, from what I can tell, it seems that if you want to have a good Amtrak LD experience you need to shell out for a roomette/bedroom. This is...

    US Airports and Transit Connections

My local airport, AVP, as with the rest of northeast PA, has no passenger train service, unfortunately. AVP is served by a local bus though, which is operated by LCTA (Wilkes-Barre's public transit system) that connects the airport with downtown Scranton (outbound from Wilkes-Barre) and...

"The Points Guy" takes a Viewliner II sleeper.

Very interesting review. It was nice to see a positive review of Amtrak. One thing that caught my interest is that he mentioned that at 5' 9", he just about fit into the lower bunk of the Viewliner roomette. I'm 6' 2" myself, so I probably wouldn't fit at all without curling up. It made me...

Intercity Bus Cuts Due to Pandemic

Martz Bus went through some changes during this pandemic. The Scranton to Philadelphia route that used to be 2x daily (3x daily on Fridays and Sundays) each way is now just once a day each way. Another change is that downtown Wilkes-Barre has become the starting point southbound and the last...

My first post vaccination Amtrak trip -- where to?

Great trip report! Glad that you had a good time. I went to Mystic years ago and I remember it being a nice town.

Should I try overnight coach again?

I was so, so tempted to try long distance coach again for a trip I hope to take in October due to the 50th Anniversary sale, but after comparing costs and thinking about the downsides of coach I decided to fly instead for that trip. I still plan on taking Amtrak for part of it though, taking...

    50th Anniversary promotion

Decided to roll the dice again and buy an Amtrak ticket during this sale. Bought a 93 NER ticket NYP to BWI for October. Hopefully Martz Trailways brings back the 7:30, 9:35, or 9:55 weekday runs to New York by then, otherwise I will have to switch to a later NER.

Upcoming Amtrak LD Schedule Changes (2021)

Wow, not sure I would want to ride the Crescent on this new schedule. Well, I guess I will have to keep an eye on the schedules of the other LD trains I want to ride in case they have any changes.

    50th Anniversary promotion

Thanks. I decided to check the other Massachusetts stations served by 449 just to see what comes up and with the exception of Pittsfield, they are all $90-96. Pittsfield is showing $50 as expected. I chose a date in October for these tests as that is what I had from earlier searches.

    50th Anniversary promotion

Boston to Chicago on 449 is $96 instead of $50 during this sale. I wonder why? I actually did buy a ticket last night for New York to Chicago during the sale period, but canceled it because I wasn’t sure if I would actually be able to go or not. I was going to keep it just in case I could go...

    50th Anniversary promotion

They have NYC to Chicago or New Orleans for $50...and Syracuse to Chicago for $42 too...dang I'm so tempted. I wonder how long this sale will last?

Comparing a LD Amtrak Coach Fares to Air travel

I often compare and contrast Amtrak coach vs airline coach (economy class) for my own travel plans and in some cases Amtrak Coach is cheaper and in other cases airline coach is cheaper. I've been looking at traveling to Milwaukee again this October and Amtrak coach and airline coach are roughly...

To boldly go ---- to the ends of New York

Great trip report! Loved seeing Moynihan Train Hall. It was interesting seeing Staten Island too and your experiences with SIR. If I ever go there I'll have to try that coffee house you went too. Looking at the photo of the closed ticket counter at the old Penn Station almost makes me sad to...

Should I try overnight coach again?

Having both seats to yourself is a silver lining to Amtrak's pandemic restrictions, I will say. I lucked out that I had no seatmate during my overnight coach trip on the LSL (maybe weekdays in late October aren't popular for traveling on that route? This was back in 2018). I won't be fully...
