How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

Can't say that we are anywhere close to Nat Read's achievement. Our train trips tend to be LD vacation related and we have been on the Crescent, , EB,and CZ for overnights multiple times. On the Eastern routes we have traveled on the Autotrain, CL, and Cardinal for overnights as well. Add in...

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

Sounds like fact finding for the moment. Hope that the process moves along quickly. Thanks for the update

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

I believe that most here would support the FRA plan to restore National and Regional train service as shown on the maps. What is being conveniently ignored is the shortage of equipment. Amtrak sends out an RFP to 8 different rail car manufacturers and to date no contracts have even been...

    Fares that don't make sense

IMO, the fares that don't make sense are the CHI to CA and WA sleeper fares ( CZ, SWC, EB) that can run up to $3,000 one way. I can understand them being expensive but has Amtrak reached a limit where they can still sell out?

    Empire Builder #8 (23) Derailment

Derailments are commonly caused by lack of maintenance on the tracks and with the wheel trucks on the cars. The freight railroads are supposed to be running track inspection vehicles regularly. Apparently it may not be so regularly. On the NE corridor there is seldom a derailment caused by...

    Booking online on Amtrak website

If I may relate our experience booking for trips it seldom works online. Last time around for a multi-city trip, we had points, a 2 for 1 coupon, a voucher and needed to pay cash for the balance. Just could not get it all to work online. Called in and and a very nice agent (who did a great job)...

    Long Distance Train Consists rearranged

On our May 2023 trip to AZ on the SWC the sleepers were in the rear. On the way back to CHI the sleepers were in the front. This creates a problem at the station when you don't know where the sleepers will be until the last minute. Expecting them at the rear you position yourself at the the...

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

Since the Cardinal only runs three times weekly; if you do a fare search for a week; on the days that the Cardinal is not running the search seems to stop and not go on. However, your recent search shown a few posts up has proved me wrong.

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

The only improvement for the railforless site that I'll suggest is adding the Autotrain and allowing the site to work well on trains as the Cardinal that do not operate daily.

Glacier National Park by the Empire Builder

Glacier National Park MT. is accessible by Amtrak on the East, West ends and even a central point. Specifically thats East Glacier, Isaak Walton Inn, Whitefish, Belton and a stop right at the Western entrance. . Cars rentals are available at all locations but at the Inn they may be limited...

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

IMO, Sean Eddys RailForLess.us website needs a bit of further refinement but due to the complicated process of finding fares on the Amtrak website; I believe hes doing pretty well. The server that is used can get busy but it seems to be working on my searches about 90% of the time. It is...

    Lamy Station destaffed again

We went by Lamy, NM in mid May and the station office and waiting room was open. There is a restaurant and saloon in the small town behind the station. The railroad that runs on the spur to Santa Fe did not look to be running that day (Sunday) but it may have been somewhere along the line. ...

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

But how long would it take you to look up fares and compare them for a week or more. With railforless you can have that data presented in list form. Seems easier to me.

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

The railforless site seems to be up running and working correctly. I just bought the developer a cup of coffee. I am not soliciting for him but a $5 donation is the least that I can do for such a helpful resource. Sean Eddy though his creative IT ability has brought back the fare search...

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

With the demise of Amsnag it had become difficult to check fares over a few days on the Amtrak ticketing site without going through several steps. Since RailForLess.us was created it greatly simplifies the fare search. The site was created by an enterprising young man by the name of Sean Eddy...

    Amtrak Business Class

We appreciate business class as the seats are reserved. This makes it far easier to board. Boarding in PHL can sometimes be a challenge. Sometimes the business class car is in the front behind the engine while other times it is the last car. There seems to be no way to tell.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I found a video on You Tube that showed Superliner type trains are being used in Russia. I know its now off limits to engage in any business with Russia, the point is that we are not the only country using double deck sleepers. Except for the room, arrangements they look very much like Amtraks...

Roomette and Coach Ticket on Same Trip?

For the cost conscious it should be possible to use the rail pass for coach passage to a city along your route then continue it by booking a sleeper on a regular ticket to your final destination. I believe that would be considered two separate trips.

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

OOPS, spelling error corrected. I don't mean to be overly critical of the CHI lounge and looking for more; just hope we to get back to where things were pre-Covid. The lounge is beautiful but whoever runs the CHI Metro Lounge is doing a terrible job on the sodas, coffee and snacks.

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

We used the Chicago Metropolitan Lounge this past May. While it was clean and comfortable the post Covid changes were not very good and remain in place. The soda machine, coffee machine, sparking water faucet and many of the snacks are no longer there. Instead you get warm canned soda (put out...
