    Tipping on Amtrak

On our trips: Redcaps when we must carry on all our baggage on the train. They take it to our bedroom and its $10 for them For the SCA $5 when he/she puts the beds down and $5.00 when he/she puts them up. If we need a bucket of ice its another $5.00. For meals ,we look at the menu prices and...

    Acela fares drop

On a recent trip to PHL the ticket prices on the Acela were only $2 higher than on the std regional coach fare, I would guess that the pricing formula is based upon load and specific time periods.

    Auto Train service expansion?

We would also love to see an Autotrain station here in NJ but it will probably never happen. Superliners that the A/T uses are far too high to get through the RR tunnels that go to and past Washington DC. What I would like to see is the return of the Midwest Autotrain that departed Louisville...

    Survey Points Club

I used to participate in the survey points club but after trying it a for a short while I concluded that the time didn't justify the return. Even at 50 points (.2665 ea) for completing the survey, it pays you $1.33 for up to 20-30 minutes of time to complete it. That's not even close to...

Why no elevated platform in Flagstaff?

Going LD on Amtrak I can't recall level platforms at too many stations. As a senior I step down, the baggage is held in one hand while my other hand grabs the side of the door frame. Thankfully the SCA is there to help nearly all the time.

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

My wife and myself always travel overnight in bedroom accommodations. My wife is 6' tall and I am 5'11" so the extra space is needed. I am a senior and appreciate the bathroom for breaks being close by. The cost of bedrooms has gone up rapidly in recent years and going cross county could cost...

Not checking baggage - how long to depart train?

The timetable will specify the exact departure times. If you are leaving from a terminal (stub end) station boarding is usually done about 45 minutes prior to departure. In route there are stations where the train can stop for 5 minutes or 50 minutes for refueling/refiling/restocking but again...

An Open House Train, done in 1995

Reminds of National Train Day that used to be an annual event for myself and thousands of others. They were big events very interesting and informative. I believed that these events were a good marketing and public relations tool but Amtrak apparently disagreed and eliminated them about 10-12...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Should Stadler get the contract; it, may be similar to what we see in this already produced sleeper car. Stadler Sleeper Car But I must point out that this is a single level car

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

Sounds like the refurbishment and update project is progressing well. Does anyone know the total amount of Superliner sleepers already returned to service? The CL looks like it has added one. Last we read there were three sleeper car sstill being worked on. This may provide for full consists on...

Christmas morning shooting on the Coast Starlight

It could be that the man who got shot on the Starlight was threatening a police officer with a weapon. Lethal force is justified but only if there is an imminent threat to someones life.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Thanks Jis for updating the info. What what i read Amtrak will be soliciting only manufacturers that have made Amtrak equipment. That would seem to narrow the field quite a bit but perhaps makes the award when issued have more substance.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Anyone hear any updates on the RFP for long distance cars that was supposed to be issued by the end of 2023?

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

I tend to disagree. In the mid 1950's the Lionel Train Corp was the largest toy manufacturer in the world. I don't believe that has since been duplicated by any model train company. Times have changed.

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

Model railroading was once the high tech item to have and was very popular in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's Passenger and railroad routes were everywhere, baby boomers grew up in the Golden era of railroads,. In the 1960's the railroads began retracting, air travel replaced train travel and the...

What do you say to overly-enthusiastic rail advocates?

Ideals and reality are often very far apart. As an enthusiastic passenger rail enthusiast myself, all we can do to move things forward is to write our representatives and support the RPA and other associations like All Aboard Ohio that lobby for more rail routes.

Buy Points and get Bonus Points

Just noticed that Amtrak now has a "points sale" until Dec 31st and is offering a 30% bonus on purchases. I did the math and the price of the points comes out for more than you can redeem them for. Amtrak charges points towards a ticket at .02667. If you buy them even with the 30% bonus you are...

NCDOT studies improving Amtrak service in NC

If you traveled the Southern RR from Ashville to Miami it required a change at Jacksonville, FL to the Seaboard Air Line. That would make it a 23 hour ride- a slow trip even back in the day when railroads were a main passenger travel option

    Brightline Trains West!

This is positive news for California and Nevada residents but it is a shame that Brightline could not plan to restart the Amtrak Desert Wind route that went LA to LAS, onto Boise, ID , and Salt Lake City, UT; two other major cities without LD rail service. Amtrak already had that service and...

    Amtrak's customer facing IT issue

I thought that the % full number was useful. If you follow that number it sometime had a relationship to the bucket price. It also helped when you booked a vacation destination well in advance and wanted to know how fast the seats or rooms on a particular train were filling up. There are points...
