    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

That's what I was afraid of! Thanks for the feedback. I know the two opposing chairs in the "Bedroom" are close, so I assumed the ones in the Family Room would be even closer (But if you can't use both simultaneously, then they're not worth it). It's such a dilemma for us, each time we book...

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Anyone book a Family Room on AutoTrain ?? I'd like to know how they compare to the Bedroom. Specific questions: -Is this 3-D version accurate? -Do the chairs stay in place with the top bunk lowered? -Does the long couch fold out to a larger lower level bed?

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Looks good - I'm noting that as an option for our next AT Trip. FYI - we were in Orlando in February, and saw a news article about the Sanford Mall shutting down temporarily for unpaid rent/utility bills. Was anyone on this thread impacted by that? Our SB AT trip is typically never...

    Car damage from AutoTrain?

I've traveled via Auto Train 4 times in the last 2 years, with a 2019 Enclave, and have not experienced any issues. However, in 1998 we took our 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan on the Auto Train, and it had a broken tie-rod issue, upon our return to Lorton.

    AutoTrain Boarding

I'd like to know also ?? - It wasn't running January or February of 2021

    AutoTrain Boarding

We wrestled with the same thing this past January, and will now go through it again in a couple weeks. We arrived around 11:45, and parked at the small exterior lot, not checking in through the main window. Then I walked into the terminal to get my boarding confirmation and select our dining...

    Autotrain Services Drastically Cut?

Our 2nd SnowBird trip is coming up, and we were hoping that things would be more back-to-normal than they were in Jan of 2020. I would like to have the Dining Room Experience, and maybe even actually talk to another passenger en-route.... Fingers-Crossed !!

Hello - jiml When are you planning to return to Florida via AutoTrain?

    Auto Train Meals

WOW - interesting that the cash price is the same, though. That's a premium of almost 100K Points. Definitely not worth it. I just received an email from Amtrak identifying $9 Coach fares on AutoTrain. I think I would suffer through sleeping in Coach for that deal, if only I had a reason to...

    Auto Train Meals

Curious as to the Points vs Cash structure when looking at next year’s trip. First week of January in a Bedroom is $1365 Southbound. Points are 145,373 !! That’s > 106 Points per Dollar End of January - same trip is still $1365, but only 48,458 Points (35.5 Points per Dollar). Why the huge delta...

    Auto Train Meals

I can validate this. We just completed our first roundtrip in a Bedroom. We requested our meals be delivered to our room. We were able to maintain physical distancing at both stations: we (I) checked in at the desk at 11:30 each time, and requested our dining time and (for the NB) paid for...

Questions on Recent Auto Train Experiences?

Thanks, BLNT - I agree that the pay off is being able to rest (somewhat), and avoid the white-knuckled experience on I-95 ! We drove it in January of 2018, and sure enough, it snowed the morning we left. Roads from VA through NC were horrific. And in SC (we stopped over at Hilton Head), it was...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Hi JimL Nice article -- My wife is definitely glad we're doing the AutoTrain to Orlando instead of flying. Looks like our journey has the train at 45% booked right now, although all the bedrooms are sold out. Do you know - Are they filling all the bedrooms, or does it represent being Sold-Out...

How was the experience, over all ? This Jan trip will be our first time in a Bedroom.

Questions on Recent Auto Train Experiences?

Haven't seen any more recent updates to this topic. We head SouthBound on AutoTrain on 1/2/21, in a Bedroom/Sleeper. Is the Dining Room still closed? Do i need to even bother about reserving a time , or does the SCA bring dinner to your bedroom ??

    Auto Train Meals

Great info. - Thanks! Yeah - I'm guessing ridership is still way down- It's amazing to me that they continue daily operations, and haven't moved to 3 or 4 R/Ts per week. I'm still booked and counting down to January 2021 🤞 Maybe I'll see you onboard one day in the future:)

    Auto Train Meals

My Next AutoTrain curiosity: What is a typical shift for the crew? Do some stay on duty for an entire 24 hr. run, and alternate days off in Lorton & Sanford? Do most live midway, and swap out at that point?? I'd really like to know how they staff it 24/7/365. THANKS!
