    Amtrak FY25 Grant Request

Thanks very much for the summary. I think I learn more here than from the RPA newsletters.

Another vote for business class! And unfortunately people have figured it out, so as soon as you know your dates, grab some seats!

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

I can report that a few days ago, the staff at the Chicago lounge were reasonably polite and helpful. The food selection was minimal, just a few bags of chips and nuts. They had a good collection of beverages, and to their credit, a very nice pay bar. Still, would be great if they were...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

FWIW, I was offered a choice of Flex or Cafe on my recent LSL trip, but I think it was a rogue crew.

Man, I'd kill for an upper berth with a window and skylight!

AS Flight1282: Another Boeing 737 MAX crisis

I'm not sure which is worse in the news today. First, a major Boeing whistleblower commits suicide shortly before a key court appearance. I'm not much of a conspiracy guy, but there's no doubt he'd still be alive if Boeing had treated him decently...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I can say that the new blanket is a huge improvement. The old one was basically a piece of felt. The new one is a proper duvet and very comfortable. Occasionally Amtrak accidentally does something right.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

I'm told that is still behind the paywall. I sent Rasputin a PM with the text. It didn't really say much, MBTA derails are not really news any more :-(

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

For a while Amtrak had regional menus. If they didn't, I would never have tried grits.

On Patrol Live has first car vs train incident on the show

I watched about 15 minutes of the second one. I'll summarize: 1) Drink and drive 2) Make a left onto train tracks 3) Leave the scene and run from the police Somebody isn't really ready to be an adult yet.

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

Speaking of the folding table, I happened to have my first ride in a Viewliner II sleeper, and the folding table was significantly upgraded from the classic checkers board. In 40 years of Amtrak sleepers, I wonder how many games ever got played on that board.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

I asked for a "share" link and got this, see if you can read it. Headline: MBTA Green Line service resumes after derailment near Kenmore Date: Mar 10, 2024 Green Line service resumed early Saturday evening, hours after a westbound Green Line trolley derailed west of the platform at Kenmore...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I very much enjoyed my first TD steak in about five years on the CZ last week. On the LSL, my attendant asked me if I wanted a Flex or anything from the cafe. I had a very nice warmed sandwich.

Do the cafe cars still sell Amtrak playing cards?

    Amtrak changed my accommodation

No, barring major mechanical issues, which are fairly rare, you'll get the room you paid for. I was just referring to "rooms" in general, as the policy of not letting you pick a room at purchase applies to both roomettes and bedrooms. I don't know what the exact policy is, but I've heard...

    Amtrak changed my accommodation

I fully agree with you, but the evidence suggests that Amtrak considers all rooms to be equivalent and substitutable. As far as I know, they've never even considered giving people a car layout and letting you pick your room. At least you can usually get someone on the phone to change a...

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

On the Viewliners the trick to hooking up the upper bed safety straps is to raise the bed about one inch. The straps are really important, so make sure they are well hooked. And while we're on the subject, when my kids were roughly 4 and 7 I would book a roomette for three (only an agent can...
