    Sleeper accommodation discussion

You can do it yourself, and there's nothing wrong with doing it. Here's the trick: First, use the long bar to lower the seats as far as possible. Then find the small square lever and push on it *hard*. Nothing will happen. While pushing on it, use your other hand to put some pressure on the...

    Amtrak changed my accommodation

Strange things happen on Amtrak. It's part of the experience.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

I happened to come into South Station on the LSL last night and semi-dreaded taking the Red Line to Alewife for spousely pickup. I missed a train by seconds, but amazingly there was another two minutes later. Being a transit nut, I pulled up an app ("Transit") that predicted I would get to...

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

"some point in time" is when Amtrak trains arrive at their destination :)

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

Could someone take a screen shot of the seat selection for an NEC business class? I am curious if they still have some pairs of seats facing each other near the end of the car, for groups of four. I tried a sample booking but they wouldn't show me a seating chart unless I purchased a ticket...

The forward facing seats are toward the front of the train in the direction it is moving.

Actually not long distance trains (at least yet). The Silvers, the LSL and all Superliners will still be all forward facing. I'm in the minority that prefers backward, for reasons discussed before. I fully understand forward folks being annoyed.

Help needed with long distance Amtrak trip planning

I've probably done the CZ 10 times, and never got tired of it. There's a lot of history you can bone up on before you do it again. The Moffat tunnel alone is worth the trip, okay maybe second to the Sierra crossing. I miss the days where they would send the CZ "over the top" of the Sierras to...

    Guaranteed connections/separate reservations

Another factor with "guaranteed" connections is if you are travelling in coach or a room. These days rooms are often sold out weeks in advance, and while they may put you up in a hotel, you may have to take a coach seat for the next night.

    Guaranteed connections/separate reservations

I just posted this in another topic, but would you consider a 24 hour layover in Chicago? Much more relaxing and well worth a hotel. I've missed the CZ/LSL connection more than once.

Help needed with long distance Amtrak trip planning

Lots of permutations. Couple of thoughts. First, if you proceed as originally suggested, perhaps plan to spend 28 hours in NYC rather than a four hour connection? Unless you've been to NYC so often that you're bored of it, there are tons of things to do and well worth a hotel room. Back when...

    Mystic, CT Amtrak station

We love Mystic and have been long time members of the Seaport, even though we live about two hours away. Our son goes to the sailing summer camp every year. I'd like to take Amtrak but for some reason very few trains stop there. We'd do it if it was more convenient, but we end up just jumping...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Can't believe we are still riding around in coaches built when I was 17. Then again, I've also done multiple trips on the Canadian...

    Miami to Boston via NYC

Absolutely. Well worth the effort to locate in the NYP Moynihan hall. Once you're past the gate dragons, they have extensive free food and a decent pay bar. And unless things have changed, they encourage you to take packaged food, including sandwiches, salads, snacks, desserts and drinks...

AS Flight1282: Another Boeing 737 MAX crisis

And flying back to the subject, the NTSB preliminary report on AS 1282 is out: https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/AS1282-NTSB-Preliminary-Report.pdf I don't think that's behind a paywall, but if it is, let me know and I'll find the original source. It has some great...

    Business Class differences?

That's why they have moon pies! Not that I can have one :) And to make up for derailing the topic with popcorn, let me mention that they are having a strange set of track work related delays on the Downeaster, and the conductors complained mightily to each other and anyone that asked that the...

    Business Class differences?

One of my first jobs was in a movie theater lobby. The manager was an inventory nut case. There was a key to the supply room and we had to count out exactly 50 cups and 50 popcorn containers of each size and sign them out to the stand. At the end of the day, we had to total the register and...
