Montreal is like Manhattan - you can't walk a block or two in any direction without finding something to eat. Whatever fast food is in Gare Centrale is not that important. If EXO kills all commuter rail operations from Gare Centrale (St Hilaire and Mascouche), leaving only REM, expect more...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago Corridor service H2 2024

I dont think most people consider that since they don't know much about trains. They query for service between Chicago and St Paul, and go when they want and possibly on whatever is cheaper. I doubt they will focus much on food service. Type of seats are not documented. Reservation system...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Train 41 means Chicago to Miami, and vice versa, the opposite of what the Three River was. Dwell time in DC is 59 minutes to Chicago; 38 minutes to Miami. This is going to be a disaster for both halves of the route. Imagine the Pennsylvanian refugees in Pittsburgh waiting up for this thing.

Tim Horton's at Gare Central didn't survive Covid. Just as well. Some Canadian Reddit boards have said TH's have gone downhill very much so over the last few years. Most Vermont advocates want more frequencies to Montreal obviously. Not just a Vermonter, but an extended Ethan Allen, and...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I heard that too. Some day, it could be rerouted via Philly, which I think is fine. I don't think 40/41 numbering is an accident and mostly solves the Pittsburgh transfer situation, some of the NEC transfers, leaving behind the B&O route segment with little intermediate ridership and is very...

A print out of the pdf e-ticket is sufficient, which comes with your -email. As long as they have something offical to play with for their stamp pad and stickers. The QuickTrack machine may give you a hard time and won't do it, saying a Passport is required. Shoreline East tickets are done by...

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

I find the "Hartford Lline" and Valley Flyer very confusing. The former is a shuttle from New Haven, usually 2 cars if Amtrak equipment. I think a few Springfield shuttles and Valley Flyers are run-thrus, but in any case pool Amtrak equipment, even 2 P42's when there is no Metrolilner cab car...

There are 10% more Borealis westbound than eastbound. How are they coming back ? The Grey Dog ?

Looks like 10% of the westbound Borealis riders are taking the Empire Builder eastbound.

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

There are no Amfleet-2 coaches running anywhere east of New York, only the Adirondack and Boston section of the Lake Shore. All the Amtrak New Haven - Springfield Shuttles that I have seen are two cars. Maybe they plan on sending them though to New York some day and thru run with the Keystones...

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

Venture coaches have 68 seats, despite one bathroom instead of two. Amfleet and Horizon have 72.

I don't like the idea of fixed train sets. The lack of flexibility only works with Acela. We have seen Regional train lengths vary over the last 10 years between 6 and 10 cars, and are variously 8 - 10 cars today. I don't frankly care what they do in Europe and Asia. But we are supposed to like...

What do you guys think of recycled plastic ties ? I've seen them on 80MPH portions of the NJT Raritan Line.

North East Corridor (NEC) speeds, new stations and state of repair

If M-8's had the heavy transformers to handle the 25Hz, it would have put the cars over 80 tons. Not worth it for the handful to operate in this service. M-8's assigned to ShorelIne East service (12 of the Connecticut-owned ones) had their 3rd rail shoes removed since they could have been...

North East Corridor (NEC) speeds, new stations and state of repair

They are going to install over-sliding 3rd rail up the Hell Gate line into western Wooside about a mile and a half up from Harold, so that takes care of the commonality need for MN MU trains to Penn Station. NJT Arrow MU's will be gone in 2 or 3 years. Everything else can convert on the fly...

Service meltdown on VIA train 622; passengers stranded

For my annual trip to QC next year, I have to seriously consider abandoning VIA Rail once and for all and head for Orleans Express. It is self-evident that they cannot: 1) Manage disabled equipment, 2) Feed or rescue passengers in a timely manner, 3) Manage their employees, one of whom should...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

People are going to compare the new fleet with the current fleet, not what ran prior to 1971 with both amenities and seat comfort, since relatively few are around who remember that. So far, it appears to be a downgrade for coach passengers, continuing Richard Anderson's trendline.
