New member with questions re first LD Amtrak trip in September

Transdorms are Superliners, which have an upper level connection on one end and a single level connection on the other. In addition to providing crew quarters, they allow access from Superliner consists to baggage cars or other single level equipment.

I think I remember something about Amtrak saying they were discontinuing that practice?

Borealis - Onboard & Hating It!

Maybe if Amtrak involuntarily moves somebody from a LD train to a corridor train, they should place them in business class as a closer equivalent.

Gaffers tape doesn't leave a sticky residue and is easy to tear with no scissors or knife. You can get it on Amazon and at some photo supply stores. Though it might not be effective at taping a shower door shut from the inside. Seems like the force of the shower door trying to spring open...

First launch of the year of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy will be attempted tomorrow or Wednesday evening from KSC, but the probability of favorable weather is fairly low...

New member with questions re first LD Amtrak trip in September

It appears that the Card is running with at least 1 VL-1 sleeper, and the 2nd "sleeper" is either another VL-1 sleeper or a VL-2 bag/dorm. So the question is not the difference between a VL-1 sleeper and a VL-2 sleeper, but between a VL-1 sleeper and a bag/dorm (all bag/dorms are VL-2). The...

Can you double-check that on your ticket? Some older posts that I found said that 5109 was the bag/dorm.

BNSF hit with huge fine for exceeding agreed traffic limits

I recently spent several hours at the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian in Washington, and got educated -- a lot. Both American Indian and Native American are acceptable to the community. Individuals and groups within the community may favor one or the other.

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Your memory fails: "Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking!" It rhymes, see? ;) Agree on the scanning speed. Baofeng scans about 3 channels per second. BC125AT scans the entire railroad band in about 2 seconds.

On another thread, someone is asking about getting a VLII Roomette on the Card. Can you share what car number (aka line number) you're in?

New member with questions re first LD Amtrak trip in September

It's best to make the reservation by phone (rather than online) and ask the agent for a specific car. The car number (technically "line number") and room are assigned when you make your reservation. You can usually call and ask to change them later if what you want is still available, but some...

    Lately, it's been either 2 VL-1 sleepers, or 1 VL-1 sleeper and a VL-2 bag/dorm. If they're running a bag/dorm, there are usually a few Roomettes available for sale.

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Nothing has been confirmed by Amtrak; it's just an assumption many of us are making based on the unavailability of both Family Rooms and lower level seating on the CL after that date, the unavailability of Silver Star travel north of WAS, and the possibility of a reduction in train capacity...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The diner was part of the VL II order, so it was new in 2018, not refurbished. I don't know when the diner was removed from the Crescent, nor whether there was a VL II diner on the Crescent for a short time or it was running a Heritage Diner up until the diner was removed.

    Amtrak Alerts and Notices

At the top of their Twitter feed: Yeah, I found that on Dixieland Software after I saw @John Bobinyec post about it above. Seems to be the only place you can reliably find reasons for delays now.

    Amtrak Alerts and Notices

It says at the top that they only post alerts that affect 2 or more trains. 98 is almost 3 hours late, and nothing on Twitter. It does show an alert on the Train Status on the website.

SEPTA Iconic Green and Cream Trolleys returning to service June 16, 2024

I thought I'd read or seen somewhere that there was a lot of drug activity out in the open along part of the route, including some drug-infested parks.

I think that's to be expected, considering the uniqueness and level of detail of the specs.

SEPTA Iconic Green and Cream Trolleys returning to service June 16, 2024

I don't think they look all that terrible. The seats obviously are not period appropriate, but they're not that bad IMO. The ceiling and the standee windows give the feel of a PCC. And they did retain the iconic bullseye lights, even if the light output and color might be different. Did...
