The great discussion of seat orientation in trains and planes

So you've got intertwined legs with the folks in the 2nd row?

    Capitol Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I don't know whether this is a system-wide cost-saving measure, but in the Viewliner II H-rooms, I did notice a thinner mattress on the lower berth the last couple of trips. Could also be they're just getting compressed as they age, and need replacement.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

That's been the procedure almost every time with Flex Dining, and they're still doing Flex on the Crescent. And please don't call them porters, as some consider it demeaning. They're Car Attendants, or more specifically, Sleeping Car Attendants, or SCA's.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Well, that report does say that Superliners have double sheets of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate manufacturers recommend against using Windex or other commercially available glass cleaners, so it's possible the crew was indeed concerned about passengers damaging the window surface by cleaning...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Is the outer surface of the windows glass, or polycarbonate (Lexan)?

    Washington DC Metro's new cars

Horizontal means parallel to the ground, as opposed to vertical. Transverse means crosswise, as opposed to longitudinal. The two of us having different interpretations strengthens my point that the authors used the wrong word.

    Washington DC Metro's new cars

All seating is horizontal. I assume they meant transverse.

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

The way I read it, the Mobile council members are more concerned over ongoing operating expenses, particularly as federal subsidies subside.

VRF seems to be changing YouTube stream IDs frequently now. The link below has a list of current links for all of their free cameras (until they decide to change the list's URL. ;) ) http://bit.ly/3FROxxw

Is free drinking water provided on board?

If you're in a sleeper, bottled water is provided at no charge. I think the coaches have drinking water spigots, but the taste may not be to your liking. You can bring your own water (or any other non-alcoholic drinks) and snacks in either coach or sleeper.

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

I just want to comment on the batteries. The creator said he doesn't want to bother with charging batteries. The BC125-AT has a built in charger, so charging is no hassle at all. I believe it charges whenever the battery type switch is on NiMH, and the unit is plugged in and powered off. I...

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Another vote for the Uniden BC125AT. A big advantage of a dedicated scanner as opposed to an all-purpose handheld is speed. The BC125 can scan hundreds of channels in a couple of seconds. I don't bother to reprogram mine for trips; I just have all of the railroad frequencies programmed and...

    Acela seating chart

The Amtrak seat map does not show windows. You can try to match it back to the car layout in the first post, but I don't know how accurate that layout is. I notice it's missing small windows next to the accessible seats.

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

Do the catenary and signal line share poles? Is it possible that NJT pulled down or tugged on the catenary, causing the pole to shake, and in turn causing the signal line to fall onto the power line? It would be ironic if the NJ governor fired off his nastygram to Amtrak when NJT actually...

    Acela seating chart

Amtrak website says: "In general, northbound Acela trains that originate in Washington have First class at the rear. Southbound Acela trains that originate from Boston have First class at the front." I'm also taking my first trip on Acela next month. When I look at the seat selection chart...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

You could call and ask if anything's available in 9810, but be careful that they don't increase the fare. Try asking for a supervisor if the agent wants to rebook higher. ETA: You beat me to it! :D

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

Only 2 sleepers on 91(23). Probably because 92(21) didn't make it into NYP until almost 8am this morning due to trespasser incident in ORL compounded by the mess on the NEC last night. Just 3 hours turnaround, so I'm guessing they ran spares on 91(23).
