    What should Amtrak change?

Um! Nobody other than those in the NEC that want to go to Europe or Atlanta or Hawaii or DFW or China or ... And of course, don't forget those those coming from all those places. And think of the financial and convenience benefits to those from Mali or Latvia who want to get to Ocean City, NJ...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

One of these "flex food" days, I'm going to bring aboard some fresh pastries and fruit along with real silver, china and tablecloth when I can be assured we can eat breakfast in the diner, then just have them bring me butter and coffee. Then I'll set it all out and when other passengers come by...

Grand Canyon Railway runs steam engines again

Of course they can! Easy as pie. However, it would be like putting earrings on a pig.

    Auto Train service expansion?

Because I think your statements are out of the ballpark. I don't know if you have been renting cars lately on your own dime, but rental car companies have become worse and worse in the last few years (Covid aside). Service, costs, ripoff add-ons, misleading pricing, attitude and reliability...

    What should Amtrak change?

I don't think buying track is the answer. Having the government using eminent domain to take the dispatching, IMHO, will work better. The FAA runs airline dispatching. It's not the track ownership that is the problem. It is the use and sharing of the track. Brightline and FEC Railway did it...

    What should Amtrak change?

The first thing Amtrak should change is its "leadership". Their failures since Covid began are extensive and the result of inability to make the right decisions, incompetence, and possibly intentional efforts to make LD service untenable in spite of their charter. And those failures have been...

Do you have to request in advance that the wall be opened when getting the two-room combination?

In answer to those that asked, yes, I insured we have the proper rooms and the very-competent agents also knew. One direction is B-C and the other is D-E. To be sure it's in the record, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and call once more.

Do you have to request in advance that the wall be opened when getting the two-room combination?

For the first time in our lives, we are getting two attached bedrooms. We're doing it on both directions on the Chief. After I had to change dates because our March train was cancelled, the agent asked me if we wanted to have the wall opened. I told her "Of course". She said that was not...

Will using upper bed mattress on lower bed work?

Well, we did what you both did but we're wondering if the upper mattress might work better. Anybody ever try it? If not, we may be the first to do so. Seems like a possibly better solution for a single in a room or two people in the two rooms combined into one as we are trying for the first time.

Grand Canyon Railway runs steam engines again

In the '80s, after the GCR had stopped running and then was revived, they had a steam engine every day if I remember correctly. We had a steam engine in both directions during March of that first re-start year and that was a couple of days apart.

Possible trip to New Orleans in July

It used to be every 30 minutes. And of course, if you were a senior and didn't know that you only had to pay half price, the driver never said a word about it to you. I would drop enough for two half fares in the box and when he looked at me to say "What about your wife?", I would remind him...

    Auto Train service expansion?

I suggested that a while back. But it wouldn't have to be just endpoints - just endpoints for the auto-car i.e. say Galesburg or one of the other stations south of Chicago to Albuquerque where the car passengers depart and the car carrier unhooked while the train is getting fueled at this longer...

The future of Amtrak and the long distance trains

Basically, NS has scammed Amtrak and the STB so far. I have not heard of any warnings from the STB to NS about the Crescent and Amtrak doesn't seem any louder than a mouse. They should be going public and saying they half destroyed the Crescent with the attempt to arrange its schedule to get NS...

Boarding Acela at a station later than the one ticketed

Here's my penny for your thoughts (I'm even cheaper than you): I would not call Amtrak for this kind of thing as an agent's remark might be wrong and if it were in your favor, you could never prove that to Amtrak. I would email so as to have evidence after the fact. I don't see how "modifying"...

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

I introduced my son to Amtrak from Atlanta to NYC for business. He loved the idea that he could relax on the train while getting work done and arrive in NY early enough to get in a half day of business. He no longer needs to travel for business as he retired at age 40. However, because of the...

Boarding Acela at a station later than the one ticketed

Evidence? I believe @BCL is correct about the two hours rule. Of course, one could contact Amtrak and say they "might" miss the train and could they meet it in STM if that happened and ask if that would result in a cancellation.

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

That's an understatement. It sucks. Amtrak screwed its customers to placate NS and NS is continuing doing it to Amtrak. We use the Carolinian to head to the NEC and the Cardinal out of WV to go to Chicago to go west.

Possible trip to New Orleans in July

The NOL trolley used to be a great way to get to the hotels from Union Station but it has been suspended because of that fire(?) at the Hard Rock Cafe hotel.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

And we in the western mountains of North Carolina got hit terribly by the weather today. I counted at least 100 tiny flurries of snow but they all disappeared when they hit the ground. No rain either.

    Amtrak Credit Card benefits

Documented delivery is a scam - especially if it relates to Amazon. For one Christmas delivery to me, they documented they had handed it to resident - when we were out of the house! Worse, Amazon would not tell me who the driver supposedly handed it to because one neighbor said he hadn't gotten...
