What's it like nowadays? Coach & Sleeper?

There are numerous ways to clear cookies as you go, particularly with Firefox add-ons. And remember, you don't have to logon to Amtrak to see prices.

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

So the question is - what did Amtrak choose because they are required to meet ADA at every station and that lift option sounds like it would meet that requirement. Brightline also says that wheelchairs can be moved from car to car because of inter-car door width. Will Amtrak cars allow that? It...

    Southwest Chief Service Disruption

SWC runs 5 days a week. Good news is that if they find the same accommodations when you call, you get it at the same price - and that goes for other trains on your trip. So ours from ABQ to CHI (then with a planned overnight) they changed our return date and charged no more for the Cardinal even...

What's it like nowadays? Coach & Sleeper?

Amsnag is gone. Amtrak saw to that. People have different opinions as to why but I think it was intentional on Amtrak's part. As to safety, nothing beats a private room for any kind of commercial transportation (trains/planes, etc). Unlike planes where the pilots have to make a tough decision...

    Huh? What does that mean?

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

I was referring to the Amtrak ones as the topic is Amtrak. Aren't Brightline's cars also Siemens? From Brightline.com:

    Autonomous, Battery-powered freight cars

It depends on where and how it's used. As someone mentioned, ore cars at a mine or processing plant. Also moving individual cars from the RR drop-off point to where the car needs to finally be or moving containers around a smaller yard. I can't see this as a reasonable idea to replace 100 car...

Does redemption activity restart the clock on the 24 month rule for points expiration?

And that "earning" doesn't have to involve traveling. Simply buying something through the Amtrak portal that earns points counts. Note that it might take weeks or months for those points to show up so plan ahead but $10 gets you ten points (or even more in some places) so you don't have to spend...

    Autonomous, Battery-powered freight cars

Well, battery technology is getting much better. There is, under development, lithium-solid batteries which supposedly have 10X the storage of Lithium-Ion and which may start production in ten years. The technology promises even more advantages such as the length of time they will continue to be...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

In my case, I had planned on ABQ to CHI then overnight on my dime to take Cardinal. When the agent rescheduled, I told her the only option was two days later as the Cardinal only ran twice a week. She then saw that there would be a night in Chicago if she did that and asked me if I were paying...

Shooting onboard Amtrak in Lees Summit, MO

From what I read, multiple people heard shots but apparently nobody searched for where the bullets went.

Newark Penn Station cleanup and upgrade

That's so ugly that if it got washed into a gully during a heavy rain, you could pump ugly for a month and still not get it all.

    Virginia Service expansion

I hope Bristol comes soon! Much closer to us and a beautiful station. With Bristol, Va, Bristol, TN abutting and Abingdon, VA as well as Johnson City and Kingsport, TN not that far away, there is a lot of potential in the Tri-Cities area. And for us down in western NC, it's an easy ride on...

Question about Osceola IA / no baggage service

Yes, the H room is bigger than the regular bedrooms and priced closer to or the same as the roomettes. Has shower/toilet combo separated from the couch/bed by a curtain. Smaller windows but one on each side of room.

Will using upper bed mattress on lower bed work?

On our last trip, we were in a bedroom. The biggest limitation is that when the bed is in use, getting to the sink is a tight fit so my wife came up with the idea of not putting the bed flat but having the SCA make it up in the reclining (i.e. not the straight back but not the fully extended)...

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

No. Transit systems often have alternate conveyance - often free for the disabled. Their stations are not far apart so if someone can use a bus or other transportation to get to am accessible station, it is not in the realm of impossibility. The chances of getting to an accessible station and...

    Booking Amtrak tickets from abroad

They email you a pdf file that is your ticket. It also has on it a QR code which you can put on your cell phone and just show the conductor. And if all else fails, write down your reservation number. The conductor can look it up on his iPhone. No need to pick up physical tickets.

Amtrak can be so good and so bad - all in one day!

I don't want this topic to degrade into an issue of sending messages w/o saving. I often do that but more often just forget until it is too late.

Maybe no cellphone coverage is not always a negative for Amtrak?

No, I'd rather see conductors be more aggressive about rude passengers. This country is becoming more like elementary school every day - if someone talks in the back of the class out of the teacher's sight, the teacher would often punish the whole class. Since the conductor knows who the...
