    Planning southwest trip

In Flagstaff, it may be possible to Uber or taxi to Williams to catch the train to the Grand Canyon.

    What happens on missed connections?

This is the one thing that bothers me about a missed connection. There is no way my wife and I can handle an overnight train in coach at our age and in our medical conditions. And there is no way to be sure that Amtrak will offer alternatives such as staying an extra day (even at our own...

    Refund on paper ticket

Ah, yes! Another example of Amtrak technology living in the 19th century. Paper Tickets for Open Sleeper travel Mailing in tickets to get a refund I can't imagine the percentage of the ticket costs is wasted on paper tickets and manually handling mailed-in tickets for refund. Moreover, I fell...

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

I'd say any station w/o a platform is unlikely to meet ADA.

    City of New Orleans Tips?

What? I can't hear you. Can you repeat that? I don't need earplugs at all. After the hearing aids are out, the train is so quiet. The engineer doesn't even blow the horn anymore. The cinders still bother me though.

    Historic On-Time data

And winter is only 15 days old! Remember, December 22 is the start of winter albeit the snows may start in November - or in August in Montana! :)

Roomette question (re sleeping on upper bunk)

I've done it on Superliners and the limited headroom doesn't bother me (in spite of people saying I have a big head). It's difficult to do it any more only because of the difficulty of climbing up. No ladder like the BRs. :(

    City of New Orleans Tips?

I brought gaffers tape on my last trip and was so thankful for it! On the Zephyr family car, I ran my extension cord from outlet to over the "closet" door and down the other side where I had left the bench seat's table down for my CPAP and cell phone. Tape fixed that. On the Zephyr return in a...

Roomette question (re sleeping on upper bunk)

When you sleep on the top, take the bottom bunk mattress and add it to the top bunk one. The bottom bunk sits on the seat cushion under it. The top does not so use both mattresses.

    20% point deduction for canceling?

He's not gone. He just changed his name to Flynn, Gardner and the Board of Directors.

I’m on the TE/SL that’s having mechanical issues UPDATE: We are about 14 hours late

Rather than than that, some manager should have used his/her head and, realizing that the conductor would run out of time because of delays, would have replaced him in El Paso by having him there when the train arrived.

Roomette question (re sleeping on upper bunk)

Until I got too old in recent years, I loved using the upper bunk. Gave me a way to get up, get dressed and get going w/o having to at least partially undo the bed just to turn around. Gave me an opportunity to, if I woke up in the middle of the night, sit in a real seat to enjoy the scenery...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

It's like comparing a bus to the LIRR. The bus has more places it stops and is cheaper because it provides less in the way of comfort and "service" but the RR is more expensive because it is faster and more comfortable for the longer distance. They don't compete. The complement each other.

Disappointing trip on CONO and CZ

As to the free anytime soft drinks, I was told on the Zephyr that it only applied for flex service, not traditional. However, if you got flex service, they should have accommodated you. On the other hand, you can, at meals, ask for a second soft drink then take it back with you for later. If the...

Here's another one about that company "killing" people: Florida passenger train line kills 5th person in a month

Rules regarding Diner doubling as a lounge

I've seen two workers and 4 tables used - probably the other two were off doing something but they wouldn't want to let passengers use those tables because having one's own is a sign of superiority.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Then again, no Lounge Dragons to make one miserable, no "we only put out six cans of soda at a time so people don't take more than one" in a lounge with 100 passengers, outstanding on-board attendants who want to help you find what you need and speeds that, while the seats might not be as nice...

Two different headlines on Brightline accident

Not necessarily true. Look how many people in Florida that have blamed Brightline for so many deaths even though not one of them has been their fault. People unfortunately scan headlines instead of reading the articles and assume fault based on that. After all, if the Brightline train hadn't...

    Diner using wrong room number

I would find the passenger and tell him his presence was requested in the diner because he forgot to pay, then mention a member of the crew was planning to call the local police at the next station to ask that that an officer meet them but they were waiting to get a better cellphone signal so he...
