Viewliners and Superliners ... what would you change?

The European railroads are doing fine with bi-level equipment and they too have a restrictive loading gauge. I'm not sure how they handle passengers with disabilities and wheelchairs, but they seem to have that worked out. The numbers of new bi-level equipment being acquired over there has been...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Quite a few times I've seen Sandhill Cranes crossing the middle of the roads. Very pleasant to see them especially when I'm walking about. To the credit of motorists here, they actually stop to let the birds cross. Too bad they won't stop for humans crossing at a crosswalk. I haven't seen any...

Jacksonville - St. Augustine commuter service in the works in Florida

The timing on this announcement just couldn't be better. Me and a friend were just talking about Jacksonville needing to get serious with commuter rail just 24 hours ago. We'll see what happens, since I remembered the buzz about this ten years ago and it's been quiet for a while.

European "Auto Train" with multiple border crossings

Smoking on a train, that's a throwback to an era where such a thing was a common. The open windows too, gotta visit a museum to experience opened windows on a train. Great video, love these journeys Simply Railway takes.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

Glad no one got hurt in the runaway and the train was brought to a stop. Seems like everyday, its something new with the MBTA. Derailments, new trains taken out of service, cancellations, etc. Nothing new in the world, but when it happens day after day, you have to ask what's going on? As for...

    SteamRail Victoria (Australia)

Steamrail Victoria has an incredible collection of preserved engines, rolling stock, and they even have a running electric train. The Tait trains only recently will start doing tours. The first tour with the Taits is on the 13th of this month.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

For the FDOT presentation, that'll be something if all goes well. I'm not someone that hopes for things, but I hope some sanity is left in this state, even when I know there isn't. I've been living in Orlando since 1995 and I've heard all the promises and plans proposed over the last 27 years...

Amtrak concedes perpetual $1 Billion/Year operating losses

China provides the most at 130 billion in subsidies and Europe its 73 billion Euros. In Europe, Germany is the country that provides the most subsidies at 17 billion. Probably explains all the new trains the Germans have been purchasing over the past 12 years. All of this is per Google.

    1977 Trip to Germany

To add more information to these trains, the Southern Railway (predecessor to British Rail) called these 2EPBs. 2 meaning two coach train + E Electro + P Pneumatic + B Brake. These were the units built to the British Rail standard, which was the Mark 1 coach design at that time. The TOPS system...

    Greyhound USA sold to FlixMobility

All I can say to Flixbus, good luck. When you acquire something that's been battered for as long as Greyhound has been, its going to take miracles to bring the credibility of that company up. Hope Greyhound does have a future.

Metrolink Refurbishing and Repainting Bombardier Cars

So documents I found on this rebuild project. They're rebuilding 50 out of 121 of the Bombardier cars they have, which are the oldest cars in their fleet dating from the early 90s. These PDFs goes into details and they're being rebuilt by Talgo and Systra...

Big Rail Investments at New York Airports Fall Short on Promises of Connectivity

Reminds me of something I read several years ago about politics and New York City's transportation. nycsubway.org: Transit Truths (1924) I hope this doesn't go too of topic, if so my fault and my post can be deleted.

Big Rail Investments at New York Airports Fall Short on Promises of Connectivity

If they wanted service to LaGuardia, why not extend the Astoria line to the airport? Oh wait, suggesting any type of subway expansion is a very difficult subject for New York City. Guess I'm dreaming too much, but its not exactly far away as this shows. You also get your connections to Jamaica...

    Brightline Orlando extension

You do realize my post was a what if situation where Brightline did electrify its route from Miami to Orlando. That's why I made the comparison between Brightline's route to the NEC, because there wouldn't be as many obstacles preventing Brightline trains from reaching and maintaining the max...

    Brightline Orlando extension

There are some downs to electrifying as some have pointed out, but there is some positives. At least the whole system will be new compared to the NEC and there won't be the amount of restrictions that limits speed on the line. Plus it would make everyone happy with transportation going "Green"...

    Brightline Orlando extension

From what I was told, Disney has mentioned CNG buses, but they don't want to pay for a fueling station for those type of buses. Buses using CNG fuel or hybrid buses are far more expensive then "clean diesel" buses and I use that term clean diesel loosely. Disney is basically doing whatever to...

Possible Supplemental funding for Amtrak in COVID relief

Private bus companies don't get funding or grants like transit agencies or Amtrak does every year. They make their money off of charters and shuttle operations from whoever contracted with them. Both of their businesses have been decimated by the pandemic with no one riding to theme parks, no...

    Bus Nostalgia

I also shake my head too at how much we lost. Greyhound cutting all service in Western Canada is just another nail in the coffin for the Hound. I feel bad for the drivers, cleaners, and mechanics who likely lost their jobs because of those cuts. To this day no one has a solution to the...

    New LD Locomotive Order Placed

While its too soon to predict the future, the Genesis will be gone from Amtrak, but a second hand market maybe there for them is something to consider. Just like there are many F40s still on the tracks today, some of which are former Amtrak units retired many years ago. This new order for long...

Metra orders remanufactured EMD SD70MAC locomotives

Essentially proof that an SD70MAC variant can be used in passenger service just like what is done in India. Now if you need US proof, go to Alaska, those SD70MACs pull passenger trains. Fact is, freight engines modified to pull or push passenger trains is nothing new. It's been done for a while...
