    Amtrak features and comfort updates

I also don't like USA TODAY. I do like reading local newspapers, however. I would much rather read a local newspaper than the major, big city ones. The newspaper in Minot, MT, that Zephyr 17 mentioned would be interesting. Or, the Cut Bank, Mt. "Pioneer Press" which is also along the E...

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

I hope it isn't just new seat covers. There is something to sitting in your roomette, enjoying a cup of good cup of coffee (which is a rarity with Amtrak), and looking at the view out the window while turning the pages of a real newspaper.

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

https://is.gd/vQuUxT I like the new roomette seats. The old seats caused a lot of back discomfort, for me. The new ones look a lot more comfortable. I still would like to see toilets in Superliner roomettes. At one time, didn't Amtrak offer a morning newspaper for roomette and bedroom travelers?

    Amtrak Board Nominees 2022-23

The propensity to favor the NEC over other routes seems like a continuing problem. I did appreciate Sen. Tester's stressing the importance of Amtrak in states with low population densities, such as Montana. The long distance Amtrak trains through rural areas of the country should be top...

Taking SMART for the first time

I hope you enjoy the trip. So far, I've done Santa Rosa to San Rafael, to the south. I'm hoping SMART will go to Windsor, north of Santa Rosa, by the end of the year. SR to Healdsburg is probably a good 6-8 years away. Besides Russian River Brewing, there are interesting shops within walking...

Amtrak Discounts (back to back LD trains)?

I was wondering if Amtrak would ever consider giving passenger discounts when booking back to back long distance trains? For example, what if you take the Coast Starlight, north, to Portland. Then make the connection, about 1.5 hrs later, with the Empire Builder for a trip to Chicago. Needless...

    What should Amtrak change?

One advantage of the Rocky Mountaineer packages is cost coverage for hotels and motels upon departure, along the way, and at a final destination. I wonder if Amtrak could have similar packages? Maybe not full coverage but allow lodging discount rates and restaurant discounts.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Here is a recent article about the service returning this Sept: https://is.gd/qWhIV1 From the article: "Although Americans are allowed to enter Canada once again, there are still a few travel requirements. All passengers must use the ArriveCAN app to submit their proof of vaccination before...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

One of the reasons I miss the Parlor Car, on the Coast Starlight, has to do with meeting interesting people. I've also met interesting people in the dining car on the "Canadian" on the way to Jasper. The Canadian has a lot of passengers from other countries, so conversations are usually...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I quite agree, Tricia. I don't think flex meals are appropriate for any Amtrak train, especially long distance. Having to spend $600-$1000 for a roomette or bedroom, you would expect quality, hot, and freshly prepared food onboard. Most likely not a good comparison, but to me it's kind of...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I remember the "old coke", in glass bottles, available at service stations. It was in a red, refrigerated bin and ice cold. Really good. And with real sugar. Maybe not healthy but great on a really hot summer day. The station had a rack set up to accept empty bottles for recycling. I wonder...

    Amtrak telephone numbers/issues

Yes. Even so, I have to think there are station or depot telephones in the station. Maybe only for outgoing calls?

    Amtrak telephone numbers/issues

Has anyone tried to call a specific Amtrak station or depot? I've never been able to do so. I think the reason (justifiably) is that the station agent doesn't want to take a lot of phone calls asking for train status. Especially when you can check train status on the Amtrak website or by...

    Amtrak App discussion

I have been having problems trying to use the Amtrak App on my cell phone, specifically in attempting to obtain train status information. It doesn't let me enter train numbers; I have to type in departing and arriving stations from a long list. I have attempted to track CS Train #14 from LA...

Ideas for Amtrak to raise revenue

I think the way Amtrak can raise revenue is for Amtrak to really want to raise revenue. I recently took an Amtrak survey, after a trip on the Coast Starlight in July, which seemed to only cover questions regarding on-time performance and a few mechanical and other problems with onboard...

Taking the Train from Miami to Alaska!

There has been a proposal, for almost 100 years, to construct a rail line from Alaska to Alberta, Canada. They say that the "A2A" (Alaska to Alberta) would provide the fastest shipping for goods, from the Orient, to North America. The cost, at least to me, doesn't seem extravagant If the A2A...

    Memory Schedules

I noticed a brief news clip, in a copy of "Passenger Train Journal" magazine, concerning "memory schedules". The news item says that the Pacific Surfliners and the San Joaquins now have them. Just what is a "memory schedule"?

    Gardner articles this week

https://is.gd/MhOy4U It looks like, as far as the "connect us" Amtrak expansion plan is concerned, if the states want it they pay for it.
