Empire Builder Chicago to Seattle in mid-winter

The Zephyr, Davis to Reno, was the last time I took an Amtrak train during the winter. Very scenic but Reno was very, very cold. I always wanted to take the Empire Builder #8, from Seattle, to Leavenworth during the winter around Christmas time. Speaking of weather and the Empire Builder, an...

S.M.A.R.T. going ahead with extension into Sonoma wine country

Did you mean Healdsburg to Cloverdale? I've not heard of any plan to continue on to Willits (in Mendocino County), but that would be great if they did. It would be a way to link up with the Skunk Train, Willits to Fort Bragg. Even better, let SMART go all the way to Eureka as did the...

S.M.A.R.T. going ahead with extension into Sonoma wine country

That's good news. I didn't know tax money could come from Bay Area bridge tolls. I find that a little disturbing. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Santa Rosa to the Windsor connection, and then beyond to Healdsburg. That will provide a nice jumping off place for wine country travel. By the...

Getting off SW Chief in Winslow vs Flagstaff

For those driving to or from Flagstaff during the winter months, please be aware of snowfall and icy roads in and around Flagstaff. Many tourists don't realize that Flagstaff gets more snow, per year, than Denver, CO. When I lived in Arizona, there were a lot of car accidents on roads...

Getting off SW Chief in Winslow vs Flagstaff

I have stayed at the Little America motel in Flagstaff. It was a nice experience. If you have the time, the Lowe Observatory is just 5 minutes north of Flagstaff and a worthwhile visit. Some restaurants near the Flagstaff Amtrak depot: https://is.gd/Q730N6

    VIA Canadian sleeper questions

Thanks, Fdaley, for the information on fares for the Cabin for 1 and Cabin for 2. I did click "find train tickets" on the VIA website and got information, as you suggested. I see your info was for March. I was curious as to the fare during peak summer months. Here is what I got for July...

    VIA Canadian sleeper questions

Could anyone please tell me how to find out the fare for Vancouver to Jasper on the VIA website. Would the fare be the same as for Vancouver to Toronto, or a little less? The VIA website may be easier to comprehend than quantum mechanics, but I'm not so sure. Do you have to log in to the VIA...

    Empire Builder discussion

I really think eastern Oregon and Washington needs a passenger train. Something other than the graveyard shift Empire Builder. A Cascade train from Portland to Pasco to Spokane, I think, would generate a high ridership if it started out early in the morning.

    Uber/Lyft discussion

I will say something positive for Uber and Lyft. When arriving at small airports or small Amtrak stations, it may be difficult finding a taxi waiting outside the station. Last summer, I took the Starlight to Eugene, OR and couldn't find a taxi and had to call Lyft. On the same trip, after a...

Poor handling of Customer dispute by Amtrak

Stories like this tends to make me very reluctant to recommend Amtrak to anyone. https://is.gd/zE0JkA I agree they wern't entitled to a refund. However, I think Amtrak management should have given them a partial refund if they had any concern about customer relations and customer...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

I agree on the northbound schedule. Northbound, I would like to see both an early morning train for Seattle to Vancouver and a train leaving Seattle around noon. I tried to find, on the internet, a schedule for the Seattle to Vancouver Cascade train which resumed last Sept. I looked at both...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

The Amtrak Cascades will start a 2nd round trip between Seattle and Vancouver on March 7. https://is.gd/L4QodO I wonder what the timetable will look like?

Various short trips around the Willamette Valley

Mr. Willbridge, I took a tour of the Oregon State Capitol building, in Salem, a number of years ago. That was fun. The next time, in Salem. I would like to visit the AC Gilbert House museum in Salem. Gilbert's American Flyer train was a Christmas gift, for me, at a very young age. Gilbert was...

Various short trips around the Willamette Valley

I am amazed by all the stops (mostly flag stops) along the Rogue River route. Back in 1955. https://is.gd/lWSgsp

    Unconventional festivals by train travel

There are a lot of offbeat or unconventional festivals, around the country, that I would like to attend. Some are near Amtrak stations or depots while others would require a rental car and possibly 2-4 hours of driving. Duct Tape Festival, Avon Ohio. Not far from Cleveland...

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

A statement from Amtrak: We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption to our passengers’ holiday travel on Dec. 21. Out of concern for all our customers on Train 6, two passengers were told to deboard after their dog created a disturbance by repeatedly barking, urinating, and defecating in...

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

Here is why I think Amtrak should never allow dogs or other pets on trains.

Overtourism, it's not just for Venice anymore

Great photos, MARC Rider! Just curious, did you use a smart phone camera or a "real camera"? With regard to the maple syrup on the Acela, it would be interesting to know if it was real maple syrup. I think VIA trains may serve real Canadian maple syrup, but I'm not sure.

    What should Amtrak change?

I do agree with the problem with the lack of updated arrival and departure boards at many Amtrak stations. Last summer I was at the Martinez, CA station for a 10:30 PM departure on the Coast Starlight, headed north. The train was 2 hours late. The one station attendant said it would be late...
