    VIA Canadian sleeper questions

Yes, it definitely does help. Thank you. Maybe it's me, but I have a problem getting through the conundrum on some of the VIA website pages. But, Amtrak isn't that much better.

    VIA Canadian sleeper questions

One these days, I would like to book a trip, on the Canadian, from Vancouver to Jasper. Looking at the sleeper choices, I am a little confused with regard to link below, as to what "Sleeper Plus" is all about. I believe there is such a thing as "cabin for one", which I think is similar to an...

VIA Rail Canadian + Empire Builder loop trip

I have been interested, for a long time, in a loop journey connecting the Empire Builder with the VIA Canadian. It was encouraging news with the proposal for a passenger train between Detroit and Toronto, which was part of the "Connect Us" plan for the expansion of Amtrak routes throughout the...

    Timetables/Flag Stops

Yes, I did notice. With the old Amtrak PDF online schedule pages, didn't they also include, on the same page, the Amtrak thruway bus connections? My old 2015 hard copy of the Amtrak System Timetable did show the timetables and bus connections on the same page. I would like to see the hard copy...

Lounge cars & Parlor cars of the past

I regret the demise of so many lounge/parlor cars that were plentiful on passenger trains. The Olympian Hiawatha Skytop Lounge: More: https://is.gd/HpaVwz I am still upset by the loss of the Pacific Parlor Car, on the Coast Starlight. https://is.gd/WvuGDC

GPS Device for use on Long Distance Trains

Somewhat related. If memory serves, I think that was a small monitor within Amtrak Cascade cars. It would give you a display screen showing your exact position on your route, as well as distance from nearby towns/cities and Cascade train stops. I wonder if the Cascades still have the monitor...

Airport delays, lost luggage, & flight cancellations (2022)

I'm glad you had a good experience at Pearson International. Good to know. A Jumping off city for catching the Canadian train west. I had a very difficult experience at Seattle-Tacoma International airport 1-2 weeks ago. The TSA line was unbelievable. There were 4-5 TSA lines with at least...

    Pet Peeves

A piece of chalk and a blackboard, for a suggested arrival time, would at least have been helpful. I checked 'train status", on the Amtrak website, before leaving for Martinez (which is about a 1.25 hr drive from my house). The info said the Starlight was running 15-20 min late. In reality...

    Pet Peeves

I know, a bit trivial, but I'm amazed at the quality of the PA announcements in many Amtrak stations. The garble and reverberations coming from the overhead speakers seem to be a problem that someone would suggest fixing. I was recently in the Martinez, Calif Amtrak depot (awaiting the train to...

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

I haven't been to Truckee since the late 1950's. My parents used to stop there on the way to see my aunt, who lived in a small lumbering community about 40 miles away. Back then, Truckee was a dumpy little town with little attractions. However, my sister said, on a recent visit, it's a fun and...

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

Yep. Many small and interesting towns have trains coming in from midnight until dawn. Dodge City, KS and Dunsmuir, CA are two examples. And then, or course, Hastings, Nebraska, the home of the Kool-Aid museum (just kidding). It would be great if some popular routes could have 2 trains in...

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

Freeport would Freeport, ME would be interesting, especially for checking out the L.L. Bean store. Is it still open 24/7 ? Another NC stop I would like to make is the Amtrak station in Hamlet. Looks like a really nice looking depot.

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

Yes, Savannah and Charleston would definitely not be considered small towns. But, interesting stops, nonetheless. I think most other towns, in my list, are definitely small town status. I will be visiting a very small town in about a week, Sisters, Oregon. Pop: 2000. Unfortunately, not along...

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

Near the San Luis Obispo stop, on both the Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner, I would add Pismo Beach, which is about a 15 min. drive from San Luis Obispo. Also, Solvang which has,, I believe, a bus connection to a stop somewhere along the Surfliner route.

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

I'm a small town person. I take many to most vacations by means of Amtrak, as the fun of riding a train is part of my vacation experience. And, I usually seek out a quaint small town if the particular Amtrak route takes me to or near that small town. Here is an article on a few, picturesque...

    Passenger Rail service proposed Calgary-Banff

I don't see anything mentioned with regard to high speed rail, which I think is more than preposterous. Apparently, now, the thinking is toward a European type commuter train, from the Calgary airport to Banff, using hydrogen powered trains! I think the new train would make a lot of sense...

Various short trips around the Willamette Valley

I visited Astoria, a few years ago, during a Columbia Gorge boat cruise from Clarkston, WA to Hayden Island, OR. The Astoria stop was interesting, especially the Astoria Column. Sometime in the future, I've been thinking about a trip from Klamath Falls, OR to Ashland, OR by means of a POINT...

Good tidings at the Staunton Station

*************************************************************** Sounds like a fun trip. I wasn't familiar with the Cass Scenic Railroad. I looked it up in a booklet I have, entitled "TRAINS- Tourist Trains Guidebook". I think you can get a copy from Amazon, as I don't know if it is still...
