    Portland Union Station for sale

Is this a solution in search of a problem. It does say “The city economic development agency, which has owned the station since 1987, has made improvements in the past decade or so including seismic upgrades and a roof replacement”. No doubt the platform and tracks need updating but at a...

    Hurricane Milton

According to ‘Trains’ looks like Orlando might see some rerouted freight CSX anticipates the 49-mile Central Florida Commuter Rail line, operated by Orlando’s SunRail and accessed by CSX via trackage rights, will reopen Friday night, providing a route into Winter Haven, Fla.

    Hurricane Milton

Looks like we’ll stay in SC a bit longer. Neighbor reports good news-got power back around 2. Bad news, 19” of rain this week has flooded the city’s waste water system. Can’t flush toilets!

    Hurricane Milton

Our neighbors in Deland report our neighborhood (and house) are ok with just minor debris and a few trees down. We’ll enjoy blue skies here in SC until power returns at home that went out around 11pm last night. They reported 15” of rain.

Don’t forgot those 200-300 autos at maybe $250/vehicle.

Justice Department Lawsuit about Amtrak priority

Today’s WSJ article says Berkshire Hathaway is disappointed with BNSF earnings and will no longer take a hands off approach to its management. As result this has occurred: “The WSJ’s reports that the railroad has brought in industry veteran Ed Harris, a proponent of the precision scheduled...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion 2024 H2

Within an hour of each other a late 97 stopped in Deland followed by a mostly on time 98. 98 then met a 5+ hour late AutoTrain on the siding just north of town. 97 had only one unit and both it and 98 (2 units) had standard consist of 3 coaches, cafe, diner, 2 VL 1 sleepers and 1 VL 2 sleeper...

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

They were in bad shape but CSX has made a significant Investment in the L&i. It’s used as an alternate route to take some of the pressure off the Louisville to Cincinnati line.

Major disaster for CSX and NS in the Appalachian mountain areas

As bad as it is for CSX, they can reroute most of the traffic that had moved on the Clinchfield. In fact they essentially did that as a cost saving effort a few years ago. NS has more lines in that part of NC and it will take a while to get it all back.

The Glenwood Springs, CO trip to Denver is now slower!

Maybe it’s the result of negotiations with UP. But hard to believe with minimal freight traffic they receive delays for that reason. But this is not a new change. This RPA schedule updated in May shows the ‘new’ times. And looking at the last printed timetable from 2016 the scheduled times...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

Unfortunately if your are in one of the two mostly all bedroom cars on AutoTrain you’ll have go to the next sleeper or lounge car to get your coffee. The SCA’s have told us the design of those unique cars prevented installing Amtrak’s coffee machines- not sure if it was ever available or a...

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

We had a very positive experience last week on Breeze Airlines. A low cost carrier but they allow you to bundle features into Nice, Nicer, and Nicest levels. We probably paid more than we needed to for Nicer (extra leg room, assigned seats, good wi-fi, checked bag. It was worth it for us as it...

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

Interesting CNN story. Perhaps there should be an Amtrak style bus system- hopefully with better management.

Modified Amtrak service due to Hurricane Helene

Not surprised. My son, who lives in nearby Blufton, said the storm was much worse than expected. He is without power (as is much of Beaufort County) with downed trees and road closures.

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

Good points although, as you mention, the railroads will demand track improvements due to self inflicted capacity constraints. And there is also the cost of building new stations. In most of the major cities the grand old ones have been repurposed into hotels or convention centers (although JAX...

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

So sad. I’m sure everyone is tired of hearing about the streamliner era of the 50’s, 60’s but.. The Dixieland left Chicago at 9:10am and arrived at Miami 4:55pm next afternoon, about 31 hours. It served the same major cities except Louisville and did use the FEC in FL. That was in the days...

Threatened strike could close East Coast and Gulf Coast Ports

I had read that this is already happening. Also CSX and NS have said they expect minimal financial impact. Containers that would now go to the east coast cities from the west coast would give them longer hauls to offset loss of east coast port traffic to the Midwest.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I wonder if the CCC on the CONO will be in addition to its SSL (as it it used to have) or instead of? If the SSL are removed, what other train needs them? How about the Eaglette?

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Today’s ’Trains’ Newswire had this: “Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods says the new Floridian will be assigned four Amfleet II coaches and continue with only two Viewliner sleeping cars, as the New York-Miami Silver Star now has. This will result in a significant decrease in bedroom capacity on...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

But they didn’t mention the fancy plastic plates😊 Good for Amtrak for trying this. If it proves very popular perhaps when it returns to NY it will keep the name but have a section on the rear for NY (or Chicago) like the EB split. I suspect Amtrak didn’t want the hassle of trying to deal with...
