New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Maybe they consider this a southbound train with odd for south, like 97/91.

Trip suggestions please (Texas, California, Grand Canyon?)

The options are endless so this may be more complicated than you want- Fly into Houston and catch the evening departure of the Sunset Limited (operates 3 days a week). Next day travel across the remote scenic southwest of NM and AZ to Tucson. Spend the night at the older but nice Hotel Congress...

    SunRail Deland extension construction

It's been a month since SunRail started service from Deland so I stopped by to see what it looked like on a mid day, mid week. I was there about 2:30 and drove through the parking lot. It was advertised to have 100 parking spaces (not sure if that included handicap). I was pleasantly surprised...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion 2024 H2

I agree. Meals in the diner are one of the unique pleasures of an LD trip for us. Meeting new people and gazing at the landscape in the bright sunlit car at 80mph is always enjoyable and makes up for the sometimes mediocre food. It’s certainly better than balancing food on the small table in...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Trying to mentally escape a week of rain and humidity in Florida, I scanned some photos from a January 2007 trip on the SWC. That was an unusually bad winter and ranchers lost a lot of livestock. The crystal clear skies seemed to accentuate the cold. And yes I opened the window in the door to...

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Sorry, the two cars are not adjacent to each other. The diner and lounge are between the 40 (and 42) and 41 cars which have all bedrooms on the upper level. The others are a mix of bedrooms and roomettes on the upper level. All cars have 4 roomettes on the lower level. So, the 40 car, diner...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

Got an email for this sale and checked it out for early October. Two premium RT Orlando to Miami would cost us about $1200 after applying the sale option. So much for Brightline sales.

    Colorado planning

As @railiner says, there has been discussion of adding a KC to Omaha route - then the CZ. There has also been talk about a connection to the SWC at LaJunta. The advantage to that would be serving Pueblo and Colorado Springs. I doubt the old Kansas and Pacific route across Kansas will ever again...

Priorities for expanding the national network

While passenger trains on CSX north of Baltimore is highly unlikely, it's certainly feasible with the right of way still there for double track. I thought I had lost these two photos from March 1958. My father took me to the Wilmington, DE station to see the last run of the Royal Blue, B&O's...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion 2024 H2

In an earlier thread on the Atlantic Coast discussion, we talked about the seasonal Florida Special and some of it's feature cars. In sorting through old photos I found this one from March 1966 when I was in college. The B&O dome sleeper has just been added to the Miami bound Florida Special in...

    Philadelphia Amtrak to Villanova University

Here is a link to the regional commuter line, SEPTA. Looks like for $7 you can get a 20 min ride to the campus. Click on the 'trip viewer' option to see the station stops. Then click on 'view' to see a map of the station. SEPTA leaves from the upper level of the Amtrak 30th st. station (aka...

    SunRail Deland extension construction

That would be nice, but far more likely is a Brightline train from Orlando to Cocoa then reverse direction to Jax. It’s only 40 miles to the coast and cruising at 110mph there is probably faster than SunRail on a more direct route.

    SunRail Deland extension construction

Let's hope SunRail does a better job of marketing their services, in connection with the counties. If not, the statement in the article I linked above is probably accurate: "The point is, if the counties aren’t willing to respond, and respond quickly to the needs of the public, SunRail could...

    SunRail Deland extension construction

Today’s West Volusia Beacon had an excellent Sunrail trip report (much better than mine) of a trip on the new SunRail service from Deland. It included a good description of using the Sand Lake Rd stop and transfer to Orlando International Airport for new terminal C.

Amtrak through the "Middle of Nowhere"

Good idea, now it'll be possible to have a one seat ride Miami to Seattle. Think of the savings in equipment and reduced maintenance in Chicago. And it's only 4 days - 3 days faster than the Trans Siberian express. 😉

    SunRail Deland extension construction

Too bad, but I guess not enough ridership. Still it looks like it should be a popular route for riders to/from the airport and still nonstop to Sand Lake. I wonder if Lynx discussion should be moved to Central Florida SunRail thread since the Deland expansion is complete.

    SunRail Deland extension construction

Thanks for the corrections. It appears there is one bus route that is dedicated to service between SunRail and the airport that meets all trains. Has this been changed? Lynx route 111 to Sun Rail

    SunRail Deland extension construction

I have always heard it was ACL, but you may be right. According to a 1916 Official Guide the ACL and SAL stations were 100 yards apart. The SAL had two local trains from Wildwood. The ACL had 3 trains, two of them from New York. Both went on to Tampa and Port Tampa where one connected to a...

    SunRail Deland extension construction

I decided I would grab a quick lunch and catch the next northbound SunRail to Winter Park to revisit that attractive town. Old town Kissimmee was very nice and I found a good, quick and inexpensive lunch at Broadway Pizza Bar. Their lunch special was an excellent chicken and apple wrap with...
