    SunRail Deland extension construction

This was my first visit without any sign of contractors working. it looks like the work is complete except for some clean up and the SunRail ticket machines. No word on when service will start, but a nice job. Looking south from the pedestrian crossing from the parking lot to the SunRail...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I suppose the crews could remain the same. Wouldn’t be the worse thing to have the OBS crew change at Washington. Although certainly more efficient if the crew ran through as total trip time not that much different than a 2 night western train. Perhaps something innovative (not likely) with half...

SEHSR (South East High Speed Rail) discussions

Saw this SEHSR update on the another site. Apparently Mayor Pete hosted the start of construction of the Raleigh-Petersburg segment. I am somewhat amazed that the first segment, 17 miles Raleigh-Wake Forest, was funded to the tune of $1.09 billion! And this portion of the line is still in...

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Sounds like a fun trip but if you’re on a cruise, do you really need your car? A regular Amtrak train (Silver Star or Meteor) RT from Washington to Orlando would cost about $944 for four on those dates. An Uber estimate from Orlando to Port Canaveral is $84. Less if you were sailing from port...

    Cardinal discussion

I wonder why Amtrak can’t use ADA money for platforms like Indy and Cincinnati to make them safer and more accessible (although Cinci has long ramps to the platform). Sounds like they’ve a law suit waiting to happen. I know at the very small station in SC where we used to live close to $1.5m...

Transfer options at the end of the journey

Best bet is just bite the bullet and take an Uber- especially with luggage. We’ve found, compared to taxis, the cars are often nicer, drivers friendlier, fares cheaper and, most importantly, if not at a major transit location it’s easier to get one. But after getting into your hotel, local...

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The January fare from Lorton is during the prime travel time from the northeast to sunny Florida, aka ‘ the Snowbirds’. The fare reflects that high demand. The reverse is true northbound from Sanford.

    A Tale of Two Cities

A bit of research shows that a Rail/Ferry/Rail through routing is still available although a bit convoluted on the French side. In 1989 we took our sons on the 'grand tour', Our entrance into England was on a through train from Cologne that ended a few steps from the night ferry in Hook of Holland.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

How does construction of the Columbus platform restrict movement on the adjacent track? Are they working on the track too? I ask this after seeing the new SunRail platform in Deland being constructed while traffic moves through on the adjacent track, albeit with a slow order. A horn is sounded...

    SunRail Deland extension construction

Stopped by the station today and it looks like they're down to some finishing touches: installing mulch, completing the gate at the south end of the new platform, and some sidewalk work. Gotta love the planting in the old baggage cart. Can't imaginen it won't be complete in a week or two...

    Attire on the train?

That’s a good look. Since marrying my western wife, 501’s are my favorite. And a sport coat dresses up a casual outfit especially with AC on high and provides lots of pockets for travel documents.

    Attire on the train?

Good for you for dressing up a bit. I don’t think you can overdress (well, maybe a tux) but pj’s or tank tops shows little self respect for yourself or others. But, I think you might be more comfortable with skipping the tie. I’m usually in polo’s in the summer and long sleeve with sweater in...

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

And here it is. The appropriately named ‘Oriole’ in the B&O museum in Baltimore we saw last week. I rode in these each summer in the 50’s on the way to my grandmother’s house. Great fun as a kid to hang by the grab bars on the upper roomettes. We saw the Braves beat the Orioles at Camden...

That would be nice but unlikely. But your comments prompted me to suggest an alternate solution

Future ideas for service in South Eastern US

Even though it’s not really part of the Atlantic Coast, this was an idea prompted by the Crescent discussion thread. That would be nice but unlikely. Perhaps Amtrak should consider running the Crescent via Montgomery, state Capitol, to Mobile and New Orleans. That was the Crescent’s pre Amtrak...

    Thanks, that makes more sense.

    Texas Eagle discussion

That’s just pitiful. On board service should be standardized across the board and funded by the annual operating budget. That’s where the money should come from. Not a piecemeal funding request. What a terrible way to manage a company.

Wasn’t there some requirement that the sleeper next to the diner have its vestibule next to the diner for emergency exit for the diner? But I guess that doesn’t mean any other sleepers have to have their vestibule forward too.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

According to Amtrak schedules— 46hrs, 24min. Better than I thought. But I’ll still take the Olympian Hiawatha. However, since the tracks were gone long ago, according to Google you can walk it in 31 days! I was surprised at the 11:29am arrival. When we rode it, arrival was 10:20am, exactly on...

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

I suppose a Plan B could be terminate the train in Pascagoula, MS, about 30 miles west of Mobile. There is even a short passing siding just beyond the historic station. At one time The L&N had a local from New Orleans stopping at Ocean Springs about 15 miles short of Pascagoula. It sounds like...
