    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

B&O feature cars, domes and observations, always started in Washington. They were used on the National and Capitol Ltd, Columbian, and Shenandoah. Even in ‘59, after NY service ended, they were added in Washington although the train began in Baltimore at Camden station. One of the highlights of...

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

Amtrak has 30% fare discount for NEC travel if you’re a baseball fan. Not sure how they verify if you’re actually going to a game. Learned about this from an email sent by the Orioles (going to a game in June). It’s lists all the MLB teams on the NEC. Can be extra for business class.

B-29 Superfortress WWII bomber set to land in the Lehigh Valley

Wow, thanks for that info @AmtrakMaineiac. My son and family live in Harrisburg and they may want to see it. His granddad, my wife's dad, flew them in the Pacific and bombing runs over Japan. We have a piece of shrapnel he took on in the cockpit as well as his flight jacket. So glad to see it...

Nominations and confirmations for the Amtrak Board of Directors

Trains’ Newswire reported Biden named two more nominees for Amtrak’s Board. “President Joe Biden will nominate former Federal Railroad Admininstration Administrator Ron Batory and Elaine Marie Clegg, CEO of Valley Regional Transit in Idaho’s Ada and Canyon counties, to serve on Amtrak’s Board...

Southwest Chief trip in 2025 questions

Rather than consider a 7 hour drive to Albuquerque from Flagstaff, how about a more scenic 4 hour drive to Tucson? Stay at the Congress Hotel next to the station and board the Sunset/Texas Eagle at about 8am.

    Amtrak to Grand Canyon

I was surprised at the 15 minute walk. But checking the details I see the drop off point is the Holiday Inn Express, not the GC Ry Hotel. I assume that has something to do with Amtrak Vacations vendor as I’m sure it is less expensive. But, if you are going to do it, GC Hotel would definitely be...

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

Just judging by the photo, looks like track is relatively undamaged, at least the visible portion. An uninformed guess would be the cause as stringlining- heavy cars before and after the very light empty bulkhead flat cars pulled them off in the sharp curve. I wouldn’t think clean up would take...

Length of train and sleeper car numbers

I have a note of the Crescent in the 60’s - 8 sleepers leaving Washington including the 2DR-MBR-lounge. In addition to the streamlined coaches it often had some green, superbly maintained, heavyweight coaches. But it was all Pullman Charlotte-Atlanta. The Southerner, operating a couple hours...

Future ideas for service in South Eastern US

You are right, fuzzy memory! I was thinking of these.

Future ideas for service in South Eastern US

Sure, I was thinking level boarding, no traps required for high level cars (assuming Amtrak goes that route for some LD equipment). Once on board passengers could presumably use the in car elevator.

    Central Florida SunRail

This is a first look at the cost for the Sunrail Sunshine Corridor May be a paywall, here are some excerpts: “Expanding SunRail to Orlando’s airport and the region’s tourism corridor would boost ridership at least sixfold in the first year of operation but come at an eye-popping cost of about...

Future ideas for service in South Eastern US

I wonder if the specs for the new high level equipment will require high and low level boarding. NJT tried to do it, but would not be suitable for Amtrak.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Instead of one of those too rich chocolate deserts, they should just offer passengers a Guinness! 🍺

How about fresh biscuits and country ham too? Would be a great way to introduce a real diner back on the Crescent.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I wonder if the new high level platforms could include a small enclosed waiting area for transferring passengers. The one at the center platform in Wilmington works quite well.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I agree RVR would not be a good transfer point because of the lack of frequent NEC service if the Star is late (and unhappy sleeper passengers if they have to transfer before WAS). But with a third run thru track added a couple years ago, the infrastructure should be ok, especially during day...

Future ideas for service in South Eastern US

I wonder if there is an opportunity to add a second Carolinian on the route of the Crescent. Combine it with the afternoon Roanoke train (66/151) at Lynchburg. Presumably the ‘new’ siding at Lynchburg could still be used to facilitate switching. VA and NC would both benefit so maybe share the cost.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I wouldn’t put it past Amtrak to ignore this opportunity to market a one seat ride Miami to Chicago as @Amtrak25 mentions. But, done right, the dwell time at WAS would be minimal with maybe the power changed to eliminate fueling. The crew could certainly work through (total time maybe 45 hrs vs...

    Greensboro security changes

Unfortunately, there was an over reaction to poorly run state institutions. Rather than reform them we eliminated them and are now paying the price. I worked in the Delaware State Hospital as a volunteer one summer in high school. I was assigned to the male geriatric ward. It was clean and well...
