    SunRail Deland extension construction

It's been about 6 months since i posted the photos above. On a sleepy Saturday I checked on progress again. The north end of the new parking lot for SunRail has been completed (first photo) and is in use. According to the Amtrak agent passengers are welcome to use it. Although a bit dicey to...

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

In college I made my train trip and beer money by selling and delivering the Richmond Times Dispatch. It was easy money - a subscription for students was $5/month and I got to keep $3. Don’t know how they made money, maybe it was loss leader for students to hook them on the paper. It was a...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

While the idea of splitting the Star at Lakeland might not work, certainly there is need for better service to Tampa from Orlando. The Orlando paper had an article about yet another expansion of I-4 in addition to the planned Brightline Tampa service, both years away. A drive on I-4 can take...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

Saw the Meteor in Deland with usual consists. Coaches were sort of clean, sleepers filthy. Pristine Chargers looked good. New Sunrail parking lot mostly paved, roof on the new platform canopy roof mostly finished and working on the attached small raised platform presumably for disabled access-...

Alan Shaw NS CEO Proxy fight

Predictably here is Ancora's response to the derailment - from Trains' newswire today. "Ancora released a statement a few hours after a Saturday morning NS derailment in Pennsylvania calling for the “immediate termination” of Shaw. The Cleveland-based firm said it stands ready “to engage with...

    Amtrak Maintenance and Infrastructure Projects

Good to see Amtrak using federal funding to build new maintenance facilities. The latest project is Penn Coach Yard- 30th st. I had not seen this infrastructure list before. Also mentions upgrading facilities outside the NEC. I wonder if this includes new A-T facility in Sanford that was rumored.

Alan Shaw NS CEO Proxy fight

The collision and wreck this week of 3 NS freights made national news. Sadly, good news for the activist investors. From Trains’ newswire- “The NTSB said that preliminary information indicates that an eastbound NS train struck a stopped train; wreckage from the moving train fouled an adjacent...

Thanks, @BarbW. That’s way too obvious to actually look at their website.😊

    Amtrak Phase VII livery discussion

We’ll, it looks ok but…. -Has to be higher cost to paint the whole car and use 4 colors -Will show dirt and dings Makes much more sense to stay with stainless steel with accent paint. Phase IV was my favorite.

    Amtrak Phase VII livery discussion

I believe we have another thread on this and it does seem all cars will be getting this as you suggest, at least according to this report: Amtrak Phase VII paint scheme

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

Thanks, once I put 'station loop road' in google, it becomes very obvious. I think I rely too much on GPS directions rather than checking out on a map where I want to go. I still don't rrecall a sign directing me that way. And it's also obvious if picking someone up from Brightline, just use the...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

That would have been good but there were no signs for it, at least coming in the north side, nor did google maps know about it. I’ll have to spend some time exploring when not rushing to catch a train.

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I think if I was going coach I’d just use the coach cafe. Decent menu and while it would cost a few bucks more than store carry out, it would be warm, easy to get and have the option of eating in the cafe rather than your seat. A-T cafe menu

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

This is a complaint about Brightline (or maybe Orlando airport). I dropped my brother off this morning and the signage for the route via Terminals A and B to Brightline station at C were terrible- almost nonexistent. We wound up at the parking garage and thanks to a couple attendants found the...

    L&N Railroad

I suggest you check out the L&N Historical Society. It’s a great organization and their archives are now located in Tennessee Valley RR Museum in Chattanooga. Might be worth a visit if you live in the area. The Piedmont was a Southern train as far as Atlanta, two smaller roads handled it to...

    Budd RDC technical stuff

Wow, I don’t remember any manual gear shifting. I rode a few times in the ‘cab’ of an RDC (‘Budd car’ to C&O/B&O engineers) from Baltimore to Washington. But then that was only 50 years ago and I’m sure my memory is accurate.

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

I did watch it and my impression was the issues that initiated the proceedings, at Amterak's request, have been resolved. Those dealt with the need for track improvements that the railroads and the Port were concerned about. The funding for that has also been obtained and construction is about...

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

Saw this article in today's Trains' Newswire. If successful, it might encourage UP to reopen he direct line to Phoenix. PHOENIX — Union Pacific has opened its Phoenix Intermodal Terminal, the latest addition to the railroad’s “pop-up” terminal strategy to test markets before building large...

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

That matches what the ‘Guide’ says. Also on the train was a 10-6 to Erie. Strangely, on that day it was an ACL car- ‘Volusia County’ where I now live 50+ years later.
