    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

The line is open. #4 went through the area at about 15mph.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

They did bus bridge the passengers. The new #3 is only about 90 minutes late. #4 is 8 hours late. The Apache County Sheriff's Facebook page has some pictures. Some reefer units are broken open and the track is pretty torn up. Check the comments for additional pictures.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

BNSF had a derailment in eastern Arizona. #3 is turning at Albuquerque to become #4, and #4 is turning at Winslow to become #3. No word about a bus bridge.

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

I'm pretty sure the active part of the Phoenix sub was rehabbed since 2006. Maybe around 2010? The inactive section, of course, is completely decayed.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

It's says "bi-level replacement", but doesn't say that the replacement has to be bi-level.

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

Well, yeah, but they would still need to rebuild and maintain it. And don't expect UP to let it go cheap.

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

Here's Amtrak's page on the study for restoring service to Phoenix. They're proposing three daily round trips between Tucson and Phoenix, and one daily between Phoenix and LA. Not sure if that last one is in addition to the Sunset Limited, or just a daily SL...

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

Service to Phoenix ended June 3, 1996 when SP shut down the line. SP merged with UP in 1998. There was a gap of at least a few months before the Maricopa station opened. Fun fact: the 1930s Maricopa depot was moved to Phoenix by a private owner in the 1960s after it closed. It's now in...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

The active portion through Phoenix was updated to welded rail about 10 years ago, along with upgraded signals. As far as I can tell, the problem area is from Welton to Buckeye.

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

I'm pretty sure that's what UP wants. UP and Amtrak/Arizona want the line reopened but they're hoping the other will pay for it. All the major streets west of the yard are bridged (16th St., 7th St., Central, 1st Ave., 7th Ave.) The streets that would be blocked are low volume and there are...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

Other way around -- it's the line west of Phoenix that's out of service. Traffic from LA has to take a roundabout route via Picacho southeast of Phoenix. The hope is that is if UP wants additional traffic from LA they might consider reopening the west line.

Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

There's also a ventilation plenum that will reduce the clearance, plus the tracks will be on some sort of ties.

Michigan Service 355 derailment in New Buffalo, MI

It sounds like nobody at the scene called the railroad. They just told dispatch the street name and there was a car on the tracks, but that street has two separate crossings by two separate railroads.

Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

They're also going to refurb the existing tunnels once traffic moves to the new tunnels. When refurbished they'll be reopened to traffic. They'd have to track which train could use which tunnel.

Leaving car (automobile) behind at Osceola (OSC) station for five weeks

That phone number is just the 1-800-USA-RAIL number. It looks like the station is owned by the town, so they probably control the parking. The town's main number is (641) 342-2377.

Michigan Service 355 derailment in New Buffalo, MI

Ow, yeah it looks like the people on site reported a car on the tracks at Lakeside Dr but there are two crossings, one by Red Arrow Hwy (CSX) and at Pulaski Hwy (Amtrak). The dispatcher picked the wrong one.

    Empire Service suspension 11/12/23

They should be able to build a scaffold to hold it up fairly quickly. A repair is going to take a lot longer. The view of the track through the hole is seriously yikes!
