    Amtrak to Grand Canyon

Hermit's Rest road is open to the public December-February, but shuttle buses only the rest of the year. However, if you are disabled you can get an access pass at the entry gate that will let you drive it. The shuttles are also wheelchair accessible. Here's the accessibility guide for the...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Normally they use a 100x number if there is a temporary modification to the schedule. For example they do it during the Daylight Saving switch. There a report that there's track work in Colorado that requires a diversion.

    Amtrak Alerts and Notices

I suspect a little from column A and a little from column B. The posts are identical to the notices on Amtrak.com, so they are probably using an API to post them to X/Twitter. But the API has been a mess since Musk took over.

Looks like CN had signal issues today.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

Can't be soon enough. The Southwest Chief has lost at least 3 P42s in the last month including tonight, and the #1 Sunset Limited is being towed by UP tonight.

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

It stopped updating at Trinidad, so those times were the predicted ETA (in italics) at that point. Now there are two broken P42s between Kingman and Flagstaff.

Sunset Limited: Maricopa to New Orleans?

The whole problem is the ideal new station is in Phoenix, so no one wants to spend on a new Maricopa station.

Short lived, temporary and seasonal stops

Williams Jct., AZ was an off and on stop. First established in 1960 when the transcon was rerouted north of Williams, it closed when the Phoenix and Grand Canyon trains were discontinued in 1969. Amtrak operated a stop 1999-2017 as a connection to the Grand Canyon RR. The middle of the night...

    Cape Cod commuter rail

The main speed problem is the old Class 2 (30 mph) jointed rail on the Cape. The Cape Flyer takes 70 minutes to get from Buzzards Bay to Hyannis. The track on the mainland is Class 3 (60 mph) up to the bridge.

    Sunset Limited and Phoenix

The old Amtrak sign was finally removed from Union Station in the last year or so. As much as I'd love the old station back, from a connectivity standpoint a 44th St. station would probably work better. It's by the existing Sky Train (airport) and Valley Metro (light rail) station.

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

The active sections have signals; the eastern end was updated not too long ago. The inactive section hasn't been touched. It had semaphores which have been stripped in the years since. It would need all new positional signals.

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

Main problem with the Peavine is that it's slow. The winding route is unsignalled, and the route between Williams and Ash Fork was bypassed by the mainline for good reason. A big potential market is Phoenix to Los Angeles, but this route is useless for it. Santa Fe used to operate a train via...

Amtrak Texas Eagle stop in De Soto, Mo

The original article says it's just going to be a shelter. "What we’ve proposed is fairly simple – a platform with a covering, open, 40 feet to 60 feet long, concrete,” Thomas said last year. “It must be handicap accessible."

Unfortunately the cameras have a cost to operate. So if they don't have a sponsor, they have to charge a subscription.
