    Kim chugs to Vladivostok...slowly

He uses the doubles policy similar to Putin and Hitler. Three identical trains spaced minutes apart each likely packing a body double. Even over perfect track I doubt it could kiss 100kph. It’s an armored train probably a blast resistant underbody with bullet resistant glass. The addition of...

    New York Penn Station v3.0

Not without razing MSG, probably Moynihan hall and a few other buildings. Old Penn Station intentionally put the Railroad platforms under street level. When they committed the crime of demolishing old Pen the platform’s were converted into the basis of the modern Penn and the modern development...

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

The Biggest benefits are payed inside Massachusetts for the state’s infrastructure projects. I hold to that. Not only as that’s what’s getting the investment for work in phases but also as the way the Subdivisions we are talking about string and the Lakeshore limited brakes down. Beyond...

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

In this case though I don’t believe that the existing service is realistically competitive at beyond a multi day excursion. An End to end trip from Albany Rensselaer NY in a car is about 2.5-3.5 hours. The Lakeshore limited is about 5 hours on the same route that’s not great but considering the...

Connecticut DOT new car order for Alstom

I was simply quoting what was stated in the new source. The accuracy of that statement is on them. I was more interested in what the nature of the Adessia rail cars is.

X’Trapolis does predate the merger but it’s Alstom’s child a Step child from the merger with Bombardier.

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

@NES28 I couldn’t agree more particularly as someone who lives just north of Springfield. Now by Peter pan Schedule a trip from Springfield to Boston South station is a 2-3 hour trip 4 if traffic is really bad. (Been stuck in it on a PPB on a Summer day.) Flix or Greyhound shave that down some...

I agree, I am not knocking that. I am just posting it with the clear context that it is a Oped.

Connecticut DOT new car order for Alstom

Just to play Devils Advocate for a second here. The Amfleet family of coaches that serve corridors in the US are a family that started with the Budd Metroliner EMU that was a forerunner of the Acela. Amtrak inherited the Metroliner service and trains but the electric system proved flawed. The...

Connecticut DOT new car order for Alstom

The Rolling Stock was never the problem. GE Genesis and Dash 8s are rated for 110mph, City Sprinters the Amfleet/Metroliner coaches 125mph. Even a rolling Apartment building like the Superliner coach is rated to 100mph. Amtrak Day zero EMD E8A a US made locomotive that traced its line back to...

Connecticut DOT new car order for Alstom

The Hartford line; New Haven to Springfield is given in most of the articles. Is already rated to 110mph. So using 125mph rated equipment makes sense. Without farther modernization of the system, rails and stations yeah it won’t reach 125mph limits.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Savings in per-passenger CO2 emissions using rail rather than air ... https://cfpub.epa.gov/si/si_public_file_download.cfm?p_download_id=541838 There are contradictory statements from Europe but then again that’s European rail which is far more electrified meaning less emissions on main lines...

    Auto Train discussion

First I am not saying they should disband it at all. I favor implementing a combination of both it’s just I think Amtrak tends to cut down on the frills where they shouldn’t. Auto train is a tourism enterprise, though the ridership doesn’t drive between Virginia and Florida, like a ferry once...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

If Airo is to go by then a full ad hoc consists are a thing of the past. On routes like the Lakeshore limited they will probably order 2 train sets one for Boston one for NYC mated at the head of an ACL42E to the tail of another set then breaking and switching tracks. Alternatively The Venture...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I thought Tier 3 was specifically referring to HSR and trains with 220mph speeds. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/11/21/2018-25020/passenger-equipment-safety-standards-standards-for-alternative-compliance-and-high-speed-trainsets Which Amtrak Acela Liberty and Brightline west...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

My questions on that are first, how far along are they? I don’t think I have heard of that service actually getting it’s rolling stock yet. Second, though they may be able to bid for Via, does that rolling stock meet US requirements? If not then it’s just about 150 cars for the Ocean and...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

My point was and remains that using your own phrasing they already are the dominant player. Unless a dramatic shift in economics that cancels those orders happens. Siemens is likely to remain top dog for decades. I mean on top of the Venture orders they also have Brightline west plans using the...

Siemens is already THE Primary manufacturer of modern passenger locomotives and Intercity railcars/coaches in the United States, Period. In locomotives there are only really 3 modern locomotive that meet tier 4 emissions Siemens Charger series in its various models SCB40, SC44, ALC42 and...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

I think that oversimplifies MBTA. The T isn’t just the Subway lines it’s a layer cake of networks spread over three states Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhodes island. Bus, light and heavy rail, ferry services. You have what? at-least 8 major modernization and development projects for the...
