VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Yes if they don't insist on doing their own thing it should be possible to get more than enough cars by then. The new Stadler cars took 4 years from order to delivery.

    Brightline Trains West!

ETCS is looking like it will be chosen by Canada, it is at least being used for GO. We will see it working for North American sized freights soon. The I-ETMS relying on GPS make it far worse with major shortcomings. Its a barley functional system that pretty often dies. Had we gone pulse code...

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

I would get mid 2030s because of rolling stock and needing congress to agree but 2040s, is amtrak really that short staffed that they'll finish connect US stuff and then move onto LD

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Amtrak is going to need to find a way to get more crews, Amtrak should be assuming 1-2 western LD sets a year will get badly damaged as thats been the trend for a long time. Siemens says cars are 5+ years out so unless someone else can spool up a whole production line faster I don't see us...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Ventures ordered now almost certainly won't come till the mid 2030s unless its an option on a state order placed years ago Amtrak just needs to fix the cars they have no to get them into the 2030s

SB 1098 is Southern California Rail Revitalization Act. We should see it today, I'm slightly worried about COG/CAG leading some of the study and all the mention of local control but we will see

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

you would just do the whole thing using a track renewal machine and then whatever good rail is left over can get put into sidings or whatever. Lifecycle cost wise its likely better to go all new ties and rail. For sidings I assume UP right now would want 15,000ft ones

San Clemente landslide affects Pacific Surfliner 1/24/24

Not really they aren't doing class 1 work 24/7 365 till the line is fixed they last time were working 7/12

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

yep if the service goes well I can see UP repairing the branch to probably class 3 standards maybe class 4.

San Clemente landslide affects Pacific Surfliner 1/24/24

https://metrolinktrains.com/rider-info/general-info/service-updates/ Looks like the same contractors who fixed 2 of the last closures will likely be doing the work I assume we will see another wall like this built, ideally we'd see even more get constructed along the entire segment to protect...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

old cars look to have 6-9in taken up by the sides, I haven't seen a detailed enough diagram to tell what some newer cars use. I agree we should be able to get closer to 20in wide seats especially if we only see side armrests with no center with a 10ft6in wide car and 32in isles.

What will happen to Amtrak California when the HSR gets built?

The state ran a great rail department till we pulled it apart and gave all the power to JPAs.

The state isn't this is on the local JPA

San Clemente landslide affects Pacific Surfliner 1/24/24

Part of it has to be the fact that State Senator Blakespear is putting the screws down on OCTA. Unless the state says they are going to give them money they are going to run only a handful of buses. From what I heard its 3 single level coach buses per train or about 150 seats replacing ~700
