Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I doubt Amtrak would get their new fleet without MU controls on all cars. at this point at least 25% of superliners have had it added and the cost savings is so minor

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Separately it seems, I wouldn't be surprised if it was build us viewliners and or venture cars for eastern LD unlikely they will top and tail, the locos stacked on the front are setup so that if 1 dies or can't lead its easy enough to have the other one do so. Back in the steam heat days and...

Management issues of State funded services

All California services have track access and priority based on paying for it. The state has millions a year up for grabs if BNSF and UP can keep trains above 85% OTP with most of the money not coming in till they hit 95%. This isn't overall OTP but what the freight railroads can affect. We...

Amtrak California extension to Reno possible?

This report looks at station changes, layover facilities ect. it doesn't address possible capacity issues which will be really fun to deal with given a large single track tunnel near the top.

No Amtrak Beech Grove moves in 3 weeks

I didn't include the rest of the state partner ones because my point was to show beach groves job isn't to do minor bad order issues that gets handled by a local shop

No Amtrak Beech Grove moves in 3 weeks

outside of major work most of the other major terminals can take care of the day to day bad order issues.

Amtrak California extension to Reno possible?

Whenever the state has money and decides it wants to do it. Then we get to fight with UP to figure out a way to add capacity to a line which now has a single track tunnel at the top of the mountain.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

even in 2011 they were running fairly large sets of upto 12 cars a baggage car, Transition sleeper, three sleeping cars, Pacific Parlour Car, dining car, Sightseer Lounge, and four coaches resulting in 312 coach seats, 42-58 roomettes, 15 bedrooms, 3 family bedrooms, 4 accessible bedrooms

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

AVP present an issue to sticking the baggage car between the loco and first coach unless they are going to modify a captive fleet of baggage cars to have the power cables needed

E and F unit locomotives today

you can take an old E/F unit and stick all new guts in them, rebuilt to a GP33ECO isn't hard. (E units have enough space for a V16 710 T3 instead of a V12) Part of the issue is they like P40/42 have structural car bodies unlike FP45, F45, F40, F59

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Amtrak had coaches because CA returned 16 horizon coaches and 3 dinners. Washing DOT could have taken the midwest talgo 8 sets

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

they are California owned not amtrak, they are incredibly slow to board. of the 14 we are luck to have about 10 in service at any time. CA may keep them in service as a stop gap solution along the coast until new equipment can arrive but that requires CA to actually want to run service along...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

I can try and get some information from my contacts in California to see what the issues are. I know Pacific Surfliner has had far more loco issues recently than in Northern California So far the best info I've got is issues with the engine control and emissions system being overly strict and...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

I learned this a few hours before it went live though some contacts but the first train should be tomorrow.

Detroit considering purchase of mothballed Toronto trains

They should buy all 20 trains and as many parts as they can as the 2 systems are compatible. The cars just got a rebuild in the late 2010s and so they'll be in much better shape than the existing 35 year old cars.

What will happen to Amtrak California when the HSR gets built?

California has talked about before leaving amtrak and going to someone else. I'd prefer if we just brought that all in house along with metrolink, caltrain and ACE. The feds haven't subsidized state routes in 15 years when the last of the under 750 mile base network was given to states.

What will happen to Amtrak California when the HSR gets built?

For the initial segment San Joaquins service will be cut back to Merced but ACE service will be extended to there. Both will receive an extension to Sacramento via the old WP main and onto Chico. Coast starlight and more service on the coast in general isn't seen as redundant with HSR running...

Would the Golden Gate Bridge have been able to support a BART train?

Yes it could have until they reinforced the bridge for earthquakes decades later. Wayback Machine Golden Gate Bridge Authority refused to let it happen and some really questionable things to try and prove that. Did Marin lose out on BART?

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

It might also be because they want LA metros order which they are fighting for right now California is also primed to order far more if we like our hydrogen flirts or maybe we will finally use our brain and get battery+OCS ones and more KISS Amtrak so far hasn't been specific but stainless...
