France's rail network affected by apparent coordinated arson

This was done by different groups (probaby 4), as the targets were definitely too far apart for this to be done by a single group (except maybe for the two targets on the LGV Est that were close enough). But this was done in a 4 hrs timespan between 1am and 5am, when the high-speed rail network...

France's rail network affected by apparent coordinated arson

Not betting on who's behind this, but setting 4 ducts on fire at 4 different locations overnight doesn't really seem that complex to me.

France's rail network affected by apparent coordinated arson

They're train supporters, but not necessarily high-speed lines supporters, as the cost/benefit ratio is sometimes way too high vs improving the existing conventional line. Yet, there's no way they would be behind this to me, as these are decades-old lines.

    Public ownership of railroads

France has among the highest track access charges in Europe, and a rather poor network outside of their high-speed lines. Flix wanted to operate several conventional speed trains, and gave up because of the excessive track charges. The first competitor on these lines is SNCB for a couple of...

    FUL-SAN Roundtrip on the Surfliner

SNCF Voyageurs has been doing that too in the main stations they serve for a few years now (even adding barriers at the entrance of the platforms), makes every boarding hell...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

In the end, decided to max out on the bid, which was $35, and still didn't get the upgrade, even though there were still 2 business class seats available at the time of departure.

    Amtrak's customer facing IT issue

In today's episode of "Amtrak IT issues", someone made me realize that you currently cannot book a trip that only combines the Empire Builder (8/28) then the Lake Shore Limited (48/448) with a single transfer. Any other combination including this one is fine though. Fargo > Pittsfield? Gives...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

I'm booked for a trip on the Vermonter in two weeks. About a month ago, I made a bid for a business class upgrade: the lowest bid available was $20, and I elected for a $24 bid (which was $1 above the "fair" level iirc) Looking again today, my $24 bid is still there, but if I want to change it...

    Amtrak's customer facing IT issue

Airlines just give a figure between 0 and 9 (9 meaning 9+). You don't want to give too much insight on your business to competitors...

    WiFi on longer routes

Most trains in Europe rely on the 4G mobile network along the tracks to provide WiFi, you can't use GSM-R to provide high-speed internet access. In France, Orange provides the 4G network to SNCF Voyageurs, they have thousands of antennas along the tracks.

In Montréal (so other directions), they're fine with the luggage bar codes being sticked to your passport only.

Carbon footprint for various modes of transport

Well, public transit doesn't exactly get you out of the weather, as you have to walk/cycle between your exact departure point and the nearest bus/subway stop and between the other nearest bus/subway stop and your exact destination, and only very few taxis are able to take passengers on their...

Carbon footprint for various modes of transport

Hello, Great project! A few remarks: - maybe that's implied, but you should of course account the co2 emission per mile *per passenger* (which means the emissions for a bus trip will widely vary depending on the local average load factor) - for electric powered modes, how the electricity is...
