Metrolink (Los Angeles) outage in December 2023

If you mean CS from LAX, the 29th departure is showing "sold out" as well.

Derailment closes world's longest Rail Tunnel in Switzerland until 2024

Can they? I would passengers trains in India were up to 24 cars long, which is about 600 m long (and that's already a very long passenger train, as it requires... 600 m long platforms!).

Metrolink (Los Angeles) outage in December 2023

Well, they're even shutting down the Arrow service, even though it runs 50 miles away from LAX, so...

Metrolink (Los Angeles) outage in December 2023

So if I understand correctly, they're replacing and testing the whole signalling system that goes from/to LAX. Not sure what they don't emphasize much more on that... But I kind of get a hint from reading the FAQ though, they're operating a passenger rail system like they would be operating a...

Derailment closes world's longest Rail Tunnel in Switzerland until 2024

Yup, there are so pushes from some manufacturers, but the main issue is the high cost of having to install a new system on not very valuable wagons, vs pretty low benefits. Technology allowing for "Digital Coupling" might be the tip needed for things to change though...

Derailment closes world's longest Rail Tunnel in Switzerland until 2024

Yes, better view of the size of the tunnel here: File:Einbau der Bahntechnik im Gotthard-Basistunnel (7029412313).jpg - Wikimedia Commons Yes, the exact system is different in each country, but basically either or both: - a sign/flag is attached at both ends of the train - the train driver has...

Deutsche Bahn has joined the Star Alliance. Should Amtrak follow?

Yup, that was Wien - Salzburg https://www.railjournal.com/passenger/main-line/salzburg-vienna-flights-cancelled-in-favour-of-rail/

Deutsche Bahn has joined the Star Alliance. Should Amtrak follow?

It was about: - initially every flight between city pairs where a train connection under 4 hours exists - then the 4 hours turned into 2.5 hours - then if an airport has a long-distance train station (CDG and LYS), this station had to be taken in account, instead of the main train stations...

Deutsche Bahn has joined the Star Alliance. Should Amtrak follow?

Not really, the "ban on short flights" is a joke, only 3 routes are actually banned (Paris Orly <> Bordeaux / Nantes / Lyon), and they still exist to/from Paris CDG. Even Lyon <> Marseille (158 mi / 255 km, a 1:40 train trip) is still allowed...

New Rail Operator London to Paris?

France has two main hurdles for competitors: - to be able to run on most of the French network, trains need a device called KVB. Their production has stopped years ago, and SNCF Voyageurs owns almost all of them (Trenitalia France has to rent theirs from SNCF Voyageurs...). New modernized...

    Euro special diverted to Disneyland

No big deal actually, a routing error by SNCF Réseau ("SNCF Networks", really?...) , and a 45 min delay in the end. But hey, I guess news outlets just want people to click on clickbait headlines, not write about actually important stuff...

New Rail Operator London to Paris?

I'll believe it when I'll see it, even Le Train seems more credible at this point...

    Cracked ICE

A few corrections and additions if you don't mind :) Rated for 330 km/h, but only gets to run up to 300 km/h. The main reason is that they have lots of trains running, with lots of nodes where traffic meet. So sure, SNCF in France for example has better punctuality, but that's easy if you only...

    More Night Trains for Europe

The new sets are similar to the current Railjets* (same base of Viaggio cars, their locomotive is a Vectron, not a Taurus), so they : - can be coupled together, so no issue with switching, except you'll have to have 7 cars per "subtrain" - push/pull capabilities (locomotive on one side, cab car...

    Modal differences in travel time

Except that for commuting, time is a fixed factor, not variable: people will on average live a certain time away from work (usually ~30 min), not a certain distance away. That's why widening highways to solve congestion never works: what used to be 30 min away turns into 20 min away, so people...

    More Night Trains for Europe

It's actually a 2x2 train, with cars shuffling in Mannheim : - Paris <> Berlin - Paris <> Wien (exists as a standalone train already) - Bruxelles <> Berlin - Bruxelles <> Wien (currently runs with the Amsterdam <> Wien/Innsbruck train between Köln and Wien)

    More Night Trains for Europe

Won't be in use on this line at this point, but should be on the Hamburg-Wien/Innsbruck train though.
