It's too bad you didn't have an Amtrak credit card, as points being added to your AGR account from card purchases would have reserved those points. I suggest calling the AGR desk to find out if you have any options to recover those ponts.

And the "one billing cycle" means that account holders need to do a one-time online payment, or send a check. I believe. We were traveling during the switch over date. Cards worked fine. I still haven't set up the online stuff, so I guess I will be getting paper statements for a few cycles...

No gap in USING cards. There is an earlier cutoff of on-line access for the BoA.

Reserve the VIA Rail portion over the phone, and (assuming you take Zephyr17's advice above) let the reservationist know you are booked on the Cascades as a connection; this should give you a discount on your VIA Rail fare.

I recently called the AGR number and reached Patrick, with whom I've had good transactions in previous calls. I needed to change my wife's name on a reservation. Somehow Janice's name was listed as Patricia, but the AGR number was correct. No problem; done in an instant.

This is guaranteed to happen in Spokane, Albany and San Antonio, where the respective trains are combined or split. The power usually isn't off for more than 20 minutes, and in the case of Albany, it's during the time when the CPAP user is awake anyway.

Both legs of your trip have to be on the same reservation to have the connection guaranteed. If you have them booked separately, call Amtrak and have the reservation combined (with the connection happening in Sacramento). But the advice above works if you really want to visit Emeryville.
