    Viewliner II Bag-Dorm roomettes

Yes My recent experience at an unstaffed station was this. As the train pulled to a stop in front of the Amshack - a crew member in the baggage car had the “garage door” open and ready to go. I handed up my bike - walked 40’ to board the sleeper, and in <2 minutes the train took off again.

Cardinal (and other trains) Cafe Lounge - or Employee Lounge?

I know this has been flagged before but it needs to stop. Certain Cardinal crews are effectively forcing sleeper customers to eat in their rooms every meal. Furthermore, they are occupying EVERY booth on the “Cafe” side of the Cafe/Lounge. This is laziness and lousy customer service. I’m not...

Capitol Limited Bike Service with no Baggage Car?

Bike Storage Mystery solved - at least Crawfordsville IN (CRF) to Charlottesville VA (CVS)! As mentioned above, it’s my first trip on the Card eastbound from CRF with my bike since the Bag/Dorms have been added to the consist. As it turns out - it was also the first time ever (after 20+ trips...

    Covid Mask Mandate for Transportation

He said “Hopefully” - and frankly I agree with him. Masks were a necessary step in much earlier days - but at this point they should be a personal choice.

    Viewliner II Bag-Dorm roomettes

I for one would swoop them up immediately if they became available. They are newer, VL2 style rooms – and I prefer those to the VL1. Others prefer VLI with the in Roomette toilet…

Amtrak's FY 2022-2027 Service and Asset Line Plans

I will give them some credit for seeming to do a much better job of having a presence on Twitter lately. And if young people are who you’re looking to hire these days, then maybe that’s an area where they need to really step up their game even further. As far as Pete, he’s a relatively bright...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Sigh…the customer service of some crews just makes me shake my head. And yes - the fact that management took supervisory positions off the trains is even worse…

    Superliner Trans-Dorm roomettes

I’ve only been on Transdorms a couple of times - but both were a positive experience. I would not hesitate to book one again.

Capitol Limited Bike Service with no Baggage Car?

I’ve taken my bike on the Cardinal for the (relatively) short trip of Crawfordsville IN to/from Chicago multiple times. These trips were all before the Bag/Dorms were deployed on the Cardinal - and as you may have seen from my earlier posts on this thread they put the bike in different places...

    Capitol Limited discussion

Even more dumb is you could probably fit a dozen bikes in half a baggage car without breaking a sweat.

    Capitol Limited discussion

I don’t remember precisely - but it seemed to work just fine. This photo doesn’t really show it - but I think there was one of those large cardboard trash cans keeping things from moving around too much.

    Capitol Limited discussion

Sorry I don’t have any recent experience on the CL - my experience is 2019. That time I rolled it up to the baggage car and loaded it myself with supervision. Round trip South Bend IN to DC. Next trip is on the Cardinal in a couple of weeks - that one is a roll-on from Crawfordsville IN to...

Amtrak's FY 2022-2027 Service and Asset Line Plans

Yes and No. I could see it in Coach. A lot of folks traveling in Coach might not have unlimited data plans. Also - onboard entertainment systems work regardless of the cellular signal. Would I use OBE? Nope. But for some folks it might be attractive

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Travel Dining in 2022 is not at the height of deliciousness- to be sure. Here’s a post from travel blogger Paul Lucas - an opinion I trust - with a report on a current meal on an up front international ride SFO to Frankfurt. Frankly - other than a little bit nicer salad - the meal looks less...

Safe places to stay by Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS)

I stayed at the Doubletree. Good hotel, easy walk.

December trip on Silver Star: Viewliner 2?

If the consist stays consistent with the current combined Star/Meteor - yes. The even numbered cars have recently always been VLII’s - but keep reading this forum as you get closer to departure time…

    Trains in rural areas

If your goal is a large pickup or delivery you have little choice. But for other purposes, large cities are often very easy to get around in. Walking, public transport, taxi, Uber. All that usually costs way less than the parking fees at downtown hotels. I’ve gotten around great in NY...

Why doesn't Amtrak run significantly longer trains?

This approach (for Class I’s) has contributed to increasingly lousy service to their customers and (inevitably) dwindling market share. It’s also the #1 cause of Amtrak LD delays - because Class I’s figure Amtrak fits in the hole and none of their mainline trains do. But it sure has helped...

    Crawfordsville Station

My wife and I boarded the Cardinal in Crawfordsville Saturday night March 12th. The platform work is about 60% complete, the old Amshack is gone - and they erected an unheated, unenclosed temporary wooden lean-to about 8’ x 4’ in size. I read in a local newspaper article the project is about...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

My wife and I were on the Cardinal and Silver Meteor about a year ago exactly. Not much has changed on our current trip. The Cardinal crew was better than last year. But the Cardinal Cafe/Lounge is still mainly a private crew domicile - no customers allowed in half of the car. But my SCA was...
