Funding, Border Inspection and Operation of Cross Border Services

As has been stated multiple times in this thread, ultimately the federal politicians that codify the customs procedures need to be made to care about issues Important to constituents. They do after all work for the voters. Last time I checked, we didn’t live in a dictatorship – although...

Agreement between CP and Amtrak about Detroit River Tunnel

As a matter of fact, even though the original Michigan Central Windsor station on that line has burned down, the site where that station stood is completely empty and undeveloped. It wouldn’t take all that much to turn that site into a second Windsor station with a platform, shelter and a...

Agreement between CP and Amtrak about Detroit River Tunnel

Probably that it made too many local stops along the way, negatively impacting its schedule.

    Amtrak trading favors with CP?

    Amtrak trading favors with CP?

Could this help progress on Hiawatha, Chicago/Twin Cities and the long putt of Detroit/Windsor/Toronto? Amtrak position on CP/KCS

Rules regarding Diner doubling as a lounge

Let’s not forget on some east coast cafe/lounge cars there is a conductors office - a private space with a desk. On my dozens of Amtrak trips including those cars, I think I saw someone sitting in there once.

LSL business class CHI - BOS and the train horn

I took Business Class on the LSL back in 2016 or 2017 from Buffalo to South Bend when sleepers were sold out. I don’t remember the horn being a huge issue, but I’m not a light sleeper so take that for what it’s worth. So ear plugs or the equivalent that you can sleep with might not be a bad...

    Cancellation Policy

I think you’re over exaggerating the airlines policy here. A fully refundable first class ticket is definitely extra cost more often than not. I know it’s only one comparison point, but I did a test booking on Delta. For a one-way, first class ticket mid January IND-BOS, it was $223...

    What should Amtrak change?

Since T.L. Cooper wanted three major items - here are mine: 1. New equipment across the entire system. 2. Elimination of the 750 mile rule. Oh, what the heck - that’s not ambitious enough. Let’s just nationalize all rail infrastructure. 3. Complete top-down / bottom-up customer service...

    Los Angeles layover

Just like trainman and penny, I can vouch for the Doubletree. Stayed there in the fall of 2018. Here’s a photo from the street. Looks kind of “high-end” from the outside, but for LA it wasn’t that bad. Here was the view from one of the rooms: Good luck!

    Rude Employees

The laziest OBS employee I’ve ever seen in my life works the Cardinal - which is my home train. He’s probably worked at least half of a dozen of my trips over the years, and I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen him standing. There are some really good conductors / assistant conductors - but...

    Crawfordsville Station

Works for me. I’ll take a new, well designed canopy over an old rusted Amshack any day - even in winter.

    Crawfordsville Station

I wish I knew. That structure is pretty much rusted out. When I was there a month or so ago, it also seemed to be at the wrong elevation as well (way lower than the new platform). You can see that in your 3rd photo.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

We often compare Amtrak Dining with First Class Air, and in my opinion it is a worthy point of comparison - although they are vastly different products. On my recent Delta flight LAX-MSP last Saturday (11:45am departure) - they served a tasty but unremarkable cold sandwich with a bag of chips...

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

It is completely feasible that the state of Michigan could acquire trackage to Toledo. They own the tracks from Kalamazoo to Dearborn, with Amtrak owning Kalamazoo to Porter, IN. And because there are so many active lines Detroit-Toledo and even Ann Arbor-Toledo, it seems there should be a...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

While I see New Orleans to Mobile happening relatively soon, I don’t see the Sunset Limited (ever) extending east of New Orleans. I think Amtrak will be focusing their energies on the routes included in their ConnectUs plan. In the next 5 years, the only LD expansion I envision is a daily...

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

I think you both make some good points. There’s no question that the pandemic has been a watershed moment in business as it relates to commercial office space as well as business travel. I can absolutely see companies shrinking their commercial office space and going to a hybrid environment...

    $66 billion for Amtrak

Yes - finally. It is put up or shut up time for Amtrak. I for one, am rooting for them to have their act together. And on this forum – I hope we all remember that despite the fact that the majority of the funds are geared for Corridor type routes – that can do nothing but help long-distance.

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

I was in Martinez Wednesday. Didn’t see any obvious evidence this project has started yet. But the worst part of this otherwise nice, utilitarian station was the rest rooms. Reading that an upgrade is imminent makes a lot of sense.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Was on the Starlight Martinez - Los Angeles on Wednesday. Not my first trip - but the views are so good - every time is the first time. There are very, very few restaurants with views that approach this train. The food is pretty good - but the views are spectacular.
